Coroner: Officials probing if rescuers ran over San Francisco plane crash victim
CBS News ^ | July 7, 2013

A San Francisco-area coroner whose office received the bodies of two teenage victims of the Asiana plane crash says officials are conducting an autopsy to determine if one of the girls was run over and killed by a rescue vehicle.

San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault says Sunday that senior San Francisco Fire Department officials notified him and his staff at the crash site on Saturday that one of the 16-year-olds may have been struck on the runaway.

Foucrault says an autopsy he expects to be completed by Monday will involve determining whether the girl's death was caused by injuries suffered in the crash or "a secondary incident."

He says he did not get a close enough look at the victims on Saturday to know whether they had external injuries.

Chinese state media reported Sunday that the two fatalities in Saturday afternoon's plane crash at the San Francisco International Airport were 16-year-old Chinese schoolgirls named Ye Mengyuan and Wang Linjia.

The two girls came with a group of 29 students and five teachers from a highly competitive school in Zhejiang, an affluent coastal province.

While declining to identify the victims, earlier a San Francisco fire official said both victims had been found on the "exterior" of the plane. A spokesman for Asiana Airlines said the two killed Chinese teenagers were seated at the back of the plane, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Xinhua also reports that Chinese President Xi Jinping "expressed great concern over the accident and sent condolences to the Chinese victims and their families."

I thought gay firefighters had better driving abilities than that.

I would think, in this age of ubiquitous video cams, airports would have videos of all takeoffs and landings, to review such events as this.

Word to the wise...always get off the ramp and on to the grass ASAP when making an emergency aircraft evacuation.

Fire Dogs are good dudes...but the adrenaline can gets pumping and burning plane is billowing smokes, things can happen.

Unbelievable if true..it was bad enough for these girls to be in a plane crash, but if they were alive and run over by a firetruck good God how absolutely horrible

Good God. You think, just maybe, it is because there was a jumbo jet crash and nobody laid out cones for a safe pathway, and there was pandemonium with people screaming, fires burning and unnameable things littering the ground for hundreds of yards around?

The charred wreckage hasn’t even stopped smoking and the damned alphabet networks sitting in the comfortable chairs are looking for more grist for their piece of crap news stories.

You sound like either you were a fire fighter or a crash victim.

Something similar happened at a fire here in Kentucky a few years back. The drivers were told to drive forward to leave, which would allow the fire crews to safely walk behind them. Unfortunately some people can’t understand simple instructions, and a guy backed over three firemen walking behind his rig. Two survived, but the third (a a female rookie on her first run) was killed.

If this indeed happened, I feel sympathy for the people on those vehicles, because I’m sure they didn’t intend to do it, and they will have to live with it for the rest of their lives.

In the heat of battle, how many men have killed their buddies or innocent civilians by accident, and had to live with it for the rest of their lives.

We live in a sick society where someone must be punished even if its an accident. However, I’m sure someone is already looking at how much money they can collect if such an accident occurred.

I hit a small child with the car once and severely injured him. I was lucky his parents knew me and understood that it was a pure accident. I had nightmares about it for years.

That occurred in daytime. How could one of the girls be hit by one of the emergency vehicles in daylight? I suppose due to their dazed condition, one could have stepped out in front of a vehicle but why wouldn’t that have been reported immediately?

Sounds like the coroner needed a little attention today. Why would you say something like that before you were sure of yourself? you certainly wouldn’t make a statement like that, and say in the next breath that, “ well, I dunno, I haven’t really looked at them yet.”

and short of a tire track, how would you tell injuries caused by being ejected in a plane crash from injuries sustained from getting run over by a truck? They would seem to me to leave fairly similar sorts of injuries.

That is a tough thing, I do sympathize. I’ve told the story before on Free Republic…

My oldest brother was hit by a car back in the late 50s when he was about six years old (I think). It was dusk, on a quiet residential street, and he darted out between two cars and was hit by a car that was probably traveling only about 20 MPH.

My brother spent months in bed after the compound fracture of his femur was repaired, and he recovered fully with a wonderfully wicked scar that persists from his hip to his knee in bright purple to this day. It’s really impressive to see… It’s about 2 inches wide and is hip, narrowing to a point just above his knee, with transverse straight purple segments with round circular things at the termination of each end of each segment. It’s a very cool looking scar, if you find things like that cool looking… :-)

The thing was, it was an accident. My parents knew was an accident, the police knew was an accident, everybody understood. It was just little kid running out to the road like he shouldn’t have, and the driver couldn’t have done anything about it.

My mother told me years later that the man couldn’t deal with it. She said he was a young man, and became an alcoholic, later committing suicide. She told me that a lot of people tried to help him, but there was no consoling him… He carried it with him.

Glad to hear you came through the other side.

and if there is a tire track type of injury, perhaps it might have been caused by the aircrafts now departed landing gear rather than a rescuers vehicle

Pretty much the same as how it happened with me. At dusk and a 5 or 6 year old kid darted out into the road and all I saw was a flicker. He’s fine today.

That’s good to hear, because I know that guilt can destroy people just as effectively as alcohol or drugs.

I tend to be sympathetic to people who make mistakes in chaotic situations. I can never help seeing them and think “There, but for the grace of God, go I.”

Negligence is one thing, but people are human beings, and accidents happen. That’s why I got so angry when I read this story.

There’s always damned people out there who have to have a scalp for some reason or another.

I’ve been heartily sick of the “entertainment news industry” for many decades.
Stick a mic and camera in front of someone, ask a question about a rumor, and go from there in order to “beat” other competing news channels to a “story”.

I guess waiting 24 hours or so, in order to verify actual facts before reporting “the human interest story” is way too much to ask from our current crop of TV reporters.
