In SFO Air Disaster, Amateurs Lead Networks in Breaking News

When it comes to breaking news on stories like Saturday's tragic Asiana jet crash at San Francisco airport, it's becoming increasingly clear that we've moved into a new era for journalism. A few years ago, the only real option for news viewers to try and keep on top of urgent stories was to go to one of the cable networks such as CNN, FOX News or MSNBC and watch stories unfold. Today, social media like Twitter, and Internet access to local news and scanner feeds, are getting the jump on the networks.

Covering a breaking disaster story is simply a difficult job. There's a flurry of information, rumors, conflicting witness reports and separating facts from noise is always difficult. The networks used to have exclusive access to the raw materials of news; they could dispatch camera crews or pick or satellite feeds that ordinary citizens had no access to.

No more. Today, one of the first reports on the crash came from David Eun, a VP at Samsung who was on board Asiana Flight 214. After the crash, he took a photo and tweeted:

I just crash landed at SFO. Tail ripped off. Most everyone seems fine. I'm ok. Surreal... (at @flySFO) [pic] - https://t.co/E6Ur1XEfa4

Local San Francisco TV station and Fox affiliate KTVU was also a major early source of information on the story. KTVU's initial report came approximately 45 minutes before CNN's Breaking News twitter feed did. Anyone following Twitter or Facebook was getting updates about the story well ahead of the cable networks.

The networks have lost their place as the gatekeepers of information and are clearly no longer the first place to go to stay abreast of developing stories ... but they are still by far and away the best source of the two staples in the news business ... Bias and BS!

Not only in breaking news, but in determining what went wrong as well. On another thread an “expert” called the pilots “totally incompetent”. Other experts figured it all out. I think the pilot should have logged in to Free Republic before landing and consulted to experts. Next time.

I think I'm missing something, so help me out fellow FReepers.

FOX News, and the other 24 hour "news" channels, stuck with this story for hours and hours yesterday with barely a hint as to anything else going on in the world. I finally turned off the TV and came back here to FR to get the real news.

It was just a friggin' plane crash! Why the hours and hours of coverage (of practically nothing). FNC even deleted The Five and I didn't get to see Andrea!
Ooops, forget that that last part. I didn't say that.

I turned FNC on again last night at one o'clock and they were still on the plane crash! So what was so riveting about a plane crash where only two people died (not to trivialize the deaths, tragic as they truly are).

Of course, and especially in SF where every word, expression and gesture in MSM must be run through the protected classes PC filter.

Free Republic called the Egyptian Coup almost to the minute, hours before the networks did.

I had FOX on for much of the day. I love Heather Childers..she has the best pair of legs on FOX, period ( and she’s 44, BTW)She does the 5am show..sitting on a bar stool..starts my day off right..but several hours of her yesterday, pretending to know what she was talking about as regards aviation.. was too much for my brain to handle..

These idiots kept droning on about “the tail fell off the plane” and whether or not that had anything to do with the crash. . .this was despite time and time again showing clear shots of the rock jetty at the end of the runway that was CHOCK FULL OF PLANE DEBRIS. . .It was obvious that the pilot had landed short and that the tail had contacted the rock jetty. . but no. . the idiots kept on and on about “how could the tail just fall off like that?”. . DUH!!!. . .Finally after about 90 minutes of this idiocy. . a general aviation pilot was interviewed who revealed the obvious. . .”it landed short”. ..what a scoop!

It made the MSM talking heads feel relevant, so they strettttttttch it out for as long as they can.

Exactly. The “Wait For It” news channels were milking this accident for everything they could get out of it. Shortly after the accident occurred, a FReeper posted a photo of the passengers walking away from the plane carrying their luggage like it was just another day at the airport.

The MSM has zero investigational powers, and must wait
until the First Undocumented Moslem gives them their script.

All the networks, major & cable did a miserable job reporting on this horrible accident. I will not go into details...but this incident should be left to the experts to determine the real cause or cause.. Having a career in aviation for over fifty years, I can assure you that what was said on TV as to what happened to the aircraft was incorrect and actually a laughable farce, stating it mildly!!!

I haven’t watched network news in many years.

I log on to FR early every morning and go to the forum. I refresh it about every 20 minutes.

Works for me! The only slant I want on the “news” is freeper slant—LOL!
