Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law today a measure that would allow 17-year-olds to vote in party primary elections if they turn 18 before or on the date of that years general election.
The Democratic governor signed the bill at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, where civic faculty and students pushed the legislation. Quinn said Illinois joins at least 20 states that set younger age limit for primary voters, citing a national voting advocacy group.
Sponsoring Rep. Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, said in a statement that the measure was only fair since 18-year-olds are already voting for candidates in the general election.

Soon after birth voter registration will come along with the birth certificate.
They should let everyone vote at age 10. I know lots of democrat voters who are NOT smarter than a fifth grader.

They will be busing the 17 year olds from schools, I’d bet.
I swear I’m dead and in purgatory for something I did while I was alive
We all feel that way. The Democrats felt that way during the Bush years....lol. We all are screwed no matter what. The only good news is that we are next to have goodness hopefully in 2016.
It was better when the age to vote was 21. Few US young people age 17-21 are interested in the ins and outs of politics, the economy or realize that wishes acted on sometimes have unfortunate consequences. Not to mention, people under age 21 are inexperienced, gullible, and often enough, pretty dopey.
But not a standard to be used for determining educational grade level.
I hear you, brother. Last year I cast my last ballot. They clearly outnumber us.
I hear ya brother! And to think I was stupid enough to move up here from the South back in the late 80s.
Believe me, I kick myself daily for that temporary insanity.
A couple of years back, California was toying with the idea of allowing 14 year olds to vote.
Get the state out of the political party primary business altogether. The taxpayers shouldn’t be paying for the internal affairs of political parties, and government most certainly shouldn’t be running them.
“This makes sense[....]”
Allowing a minor to vote in an official government election makes no sense at all, not even in a primary, when you note how the minor is not emancipated and has no legal authority to make contracts or be responsible for the person’s own acts and misdeeds. This amounts to the fundamentally illegal and unconstitutional granting of unemancipated authority with no responsibility.
It was better when only land and business owners (read as: stakeholders, creators of wealth, producers) voted. Today, the political machine has empowered a different class...the consumers... the uneducated... the entitled.
Oh goody ... more uninformed voters.
12 y.o.s allowed to vote if they will reach the age of majority before the end of the senator’s term.
Why not tag them at birth? Oh, wait they don’t like those burdensome births!
Liberals will always push changes like this. They pushed the drop from 21 to 18 under the guise of “if they can serve in Vietnam then they should be able to vote”, which was true. Then the turn around and do all the can to delay or loose the military ballots.
A few years ago some idiot, I believe a professor in California, was pushing to lower the voting age to 10 years old.
The less rational the electorate, the better for the liberal.
Not tougher... the Dems are just getting lazier and want to make it easier on themselves.
Either way, I'd guess it's NOT helpful in moving America to reverse its direction.
Yes, but why double their numbers?
Maybe our pets should vote instead. They can't read, either, so what's the diff? And my cat is smarter than any 17 year old I ever saw - in the two youngest generations, anyway.
Oh. Dogs like to have masters and cats believe in entitlements. Maybe not.
