...The Solar Impulse took off from Dulles International Airport just before 5 a.m. Saturday. It was anticipated to soar over Maryland, Delaware, past Atlantic City, N.J., and by the Statue of Liberty before landing at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport early Sunday morning, The Associated Press reported.

The plane's estimated time of arrival in New York is around 2 a.m., according to its website.André Borschberg, the Solar Impulse's pilot, will not guide the plane to climb to more than 10,000 feet during its journey to the Big Apple...

Oh, this is what obama needs to go on all his vacations. They can call it Air Force 0.01

nobama is prolly having orgasms over this.

But, like his windmills and his electric cars, this plane is cool but VERY impractical.

It holds just one person and can’t fly faster than 45mph.

Very interesting but weird.

Their is a whole sub-segment who are totally gun-ho about electric airplanes and solar and they are brainiac aviation types. Don't get me wrong these are brilliant peopel... However, on of my gnomes who has been to their confabs denoted the propaganda about how we have to do this global warming etc was nauseating, speaker after speaker.

I mentioned to my auto gnome about this E-airplane thing, and he is very aware of the 4 wheeled projects from an engineering standpoint, and they were flummoxed by this E-airplane thing, he couldn't see it at all with the power densities we have now and the weight involved...

They did not mention that in the article, at least not that I saw. Even so, how much do you want to bet they hooked up to an outlet to charge them up? Maybe just topped them off? Coal, fuel oil, or nuclear still was used for the power then in some way.

Dulles to NY in 22 hours.
A Conestoga Wagon would probably be better.
What is this mostly night flying?

Must be a Lunar/Solar powered plane.....

How ‘brilliant’ are these people when they are pushing electric cars then wanting to cut back electricity.

Was in the vicinity of Moorefield WV the other day and gas was 40 cents higher than Warrenton VA, about 2 hrs away.
A native was filling up (turned out a recent arrival) and I mentioned to her about gas being 40 cents cheaper in VA and she made an offhand remark and I figured I could hit on the windmills and said “Shame they wasted all that money on the windmills that are keeping people up at night and killing birds at a rapid rate. Maybe they should have invested the money in CELL PHONE towers so there would be enough cell phone service to make people WANT to go through the area, bringing MONEY?”, she ‘agreed’ with me and I went for the jugular “and these idiots keep sending the same people back in office with the same result, before you know it, they will be shutting down the main revenue source while taking your guns away”.
Again she agreed and we parted.
Need to get some stickie pad messages to leave on the pumps etc....

That solar job has almost done as good as Cal Rodgers in his Wright Flyer EX.

From the article: The Solar Impulse's journey started in San Francisco in early May and has stopped along the way in Phoenix, Dallas-Forth Worth, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Dulles.

Seems that it is taking hops rather than a long-haul approach. probably doesn't take much power and has the capacity to store some power, but highly impractical as it seems it can only go a few hundred miles at 45 mph.

bama will probably direct the postal service to buy thousands of these and reinstitute air mail service - 1 letter per flight.
