((snip))
Meanwhile, a 16-month-old girl died in Baltimore after being left in a truck by a relative who forgot her when he went home to take a nap, NBCWashington.com reported, citing police.

No way a mother could forget her baby in the car.
Just an excuse for a postpartum abortion.
How the hell do you ....ahh , never mind ...
How f***ed up do you have to be to leave your kid like that?
Just factor in a parent with little sleep, too much work, carelessness and a lifetime of regret.
It has happened here. The father and his friend should have been executed by placing them in a car with the windows rolled up on a very hot day.
Years ago, I once got some baby chicks, placed them in my car at noon, and found them all dead in the evening, even though the windows were down. It was just too hot out side.
I learned a hard lesson that day.
Prayers for both.
How true.
You can convince me of many things, but a mother forgetting that her child is in the car ... BS
As a former (ret.) LEO, I suffered through two of these events (as the first officer on scene) and trust me it is horrendous, something I still have nightmares about.
I think it depends on the mother.
Some mothers just don’t care that much.
Others are mentally not with it, for whatever reason.
I sincerely believe that sometimes it’s just a tragic and horrifying lapse of consciousness and awareness brought on by thinking of too many things at once. Something gets dropped, and it’s the absolute worst thing.
And yes, lack of sleep is a factor. As is a general lack of ability to keep up with all the details of what’s going on.
Possibly.
However, thanks to the normalization of daycare, it’s normal for many people to be used to going about their business and not realize that their kids aren’t around.
You don’t have to have gone through this to feel at least a little pity for this parent—you just have to come close once or twice in a lifetime. There are few people more scatter-brained than a parent of a baby—there is just so much distraction. The very nature of being a parent means that your focus is divided from moment to moment—add to that working a couple of jobs and doing without rest. Oh, I know how it might happen. Thank the Lord it never did.
In addition to all the things you mentioned, I also blame a certain amount of the problem to the child being in the back seat and often asleep and quiet.
Like you, I am grateful that no serious harm befell during the “growing years”. The guilt would be unbearable.
Add to this the fact that it is illegal to put a child seat in the front seat where you can see and be aware of them.
Thank you, Mamzelle.
For more than a century children have been viewed by too many as a shameful, expensive, nuisance, instead of the little instances of God’s love that they really are. Taking care of them is pushed to one side.
In such a culture, I can bless God that I was able to be a stay-at-home parent whose day was centerd on my child.
Why do people like that have children? My mother was like a drill sergeant.
Reason #1 that mothers should not have jobs. Their job is...being a mother.
No excuses. Charge her with something.
I have real trouble believing a child can be forgotten in a car. Everyone I see getting out a car turns back and glances at it. Women have purses they turn and pick up and look in the back seat.
Frankly I think this is just plain murder and excused away as forgetting. I notice too this happens in the summer so often and not during the year when the tempatures are mild.
In a perfect world, you are correct.
Of course some choose to be single parents. That is not always the case.
I think back about my Mom who was left with 3 kids. Not her choice. She worked two jobs for years just to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads..and not a very fancy roof, lol.
I was able to help her with my knuckleheaded brothers and when I was old enough to work...financially. But she was still stretched very thin. It’s not always a choice.
One morning we were running very late. I drove my son directly to school without stopping at the sitter so he could get there on time. Then I drove to work. I was so used to driving directly to work after dropping my son at school that I did it without thinking. And I was distracted from being late already.
Thanks be to God that I looked in the back seat as I shut the car door. There was my beautiful daughter in her car seat looking up at me, quiet as a mouse.
You can judge if you want, but try having mercy instead. Human beings make mistakes. Sometimes horrible mistakes. If I had lost my daughter I would never have been able to live with the guilt
