Mark guest hosted for Rush on Friday. Here are some highlights:
On the meaning of Independence Day: "This is how Americans in the year 2013 celebrate their independence, by surrendering their beach umbrellas at the Boston Pops concert because the police have determined they could be used as spears. George III wouldn't have done this to you."
On White Guilt, Gays and Egypt: "The pro-Morsi crowds, the anti-Morsi crowds, either side, how many of them do you think would be capable of writing a First Amendment or understanding what it means? That's why the American Revolution succeeded and almost every other revolution that takes place fails, because they do not meet the conditions necessary to live as a free people.

Maybe some Rush member can post more on the Boston Umbrella story..heard just a little and Mark was doing really good..This country has turned into a bunch of wimps..think minutemen
I wonder if the irony dawned on any of the attendees.
Steyn pyng!
George III was an amateur.
George III would be jealous in fact.
Hell, he’d probably think it was over the line.
My only disappointment in our visit to DC was how much of the National Mall was temporarily fenced off (due to the 4th of July) making it difficult to visit some of the monuments and caused alot of extra walking in very hot and humid conditions.
Still, very glad we went. The fireworks last night were SPECTACULAR. People were all friendly, and we enjoyed our visit (despite my feeling like I was in "enemy territory" the entire time.)
Wow, I have visited people in prison — and on “food days,” we even get to bring in plastic silverware. Not so under martial law Boston.
I attended a FW display in a Western Suburb of Chicago, and it was like a time machine into the 1950’s, sociologically. Just one big family picnic. All I can think is the longer we can keep this a secret, the better.
Yesterday I walked in an Independence Day parade in a small town in southern Colo. There were about 550 marchers. At the head were 4 County Sheriffs from southern Colo.
Every one of us either carried a pistol or rifle. Some carried both.
Mark Steyn ping.
Freepmail me, if you want on or off the Mark Steyn ping list.
Thanks for the ping Slings and Arrows
“..and it was like a time machine into the 1950s..”
At a nearby lakeside city park last night to watch the fireworks. Out of the five groups of people sitting around us, only one was speaking English. I had mixed emotions that switched from “if they love America so much - can’t they learn English”, to “Hey - everybody wants to have the freedoms that I enjoy”.
Care to name which suburb? I live on the SW Side between Orland Park and Lockport. Fireworks out here typically aren't that great.
Now the fireworks in Washington DC the other night as we sat on the National Mall at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial were nothing short of spectacular!
It dawned on a lot of people sometime before July 4th. Attendance at the Boston celebration was down by 50% according to news reports.
There are plenty of ways to celebrate the 4th of July. No need to tolerate intrusive governmental behavior on Independence Day. If liberals and their ilk want to stand in line to be searched they can. The rest of us will celebrate freedom while they give up theirs.
If they keep the same political views they had in the old country, we won’t have freedom for long. They will vote in the “free lunch” crowd and that will be it.
That is if he were capable of rational thought.
