Johnny Depp's gamble on reviving "The Lone Ranger" as a blockbuster action spectacle appears to be going down in flames. The latest collaboration with Depp's "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gore Verbinski opened to a weak $9.6 million on Wednesday. The July 4 holiday is traditionally soft for movie going but things should heat back up through the weekend, at which point "Lone Ranger" will be looking to regain ground if it hopes to recoup a budget estimated to be as high as $250 million.

i can’t remember the last time i was i a full pay theater. actually the last cheap theater was PERCY JACKSON AND THE LIGHTENING THIEF because the frau and i had read all the books. saturday night, a/c $11 for 2 tickets, popcorn and a big drink. will see what ENDER’S GAME looks like. currently in book 1 of the pre-trilogy, and have all for ENDER books.

Great movie about the War of Northern Aggression
Most people don’t with to see a movie about Captain Jack Tonto and his inept sidekick.
It’s summer; the kids are home from school; “G” and “PG” movies tend to pull high ratings when the young ones are out of school; and besides, the young and digital-annimation fans of all ages (like myself) make an existing big fan base for Despicable Me 2, ever since the original Despicable Me.
I like Depp as an actor who likes to be different, but his Pirates of the Carribean group has not been among my favorites for him. If his Lone Ranger reminds me too much of those roles I will not likely be a fan of this one either.
I saw it today as well with my family,enjoyed it immensely,I am 63,and when the original theme kicked in I had the same memories revived. Good action,laughs,scenery great movie matinee movie,some people really take their lives at movies too seriously,go with the attitude of enjoying a western fun movie,thats all.
I saw it on Sunday. I wasn’t expecting much, yet I was still greatly disappointed. The reason I was disappointed is because they made the Lone Ranger out to be a buffoon and Tanto, eventually, to be somewhat psycho.
I get really angry when movies like this are made, which defile the memories of our classic heros.

Well I saw it and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’d even see it a second time.
my granddaughter is waiting for the next Percy Jackson film...she actually went out and bought the books and has me reading them. And she is learning a lot of Greek mythology/stories while she is at it.
But her real love is Hunger Games...hope they don’t ruin that one with making the district 13 fascist president a Palin clone...
The last movie I saw was Moonrise Kingdom at the local vintage theater. Great movie.
As an old guy who grew up hearing and seeing Jay Silverheels as Tonto in practically every species of Lone Ranger ever produced, I have a hard time imagining anyone else in the role, maybe especially Johnny Depp - Edward Scissorhands/some pirate as Tonto - I think not.....
I think Johnny Depp ‘Tonto’ getup turns a lot of Lone Ranger fans off. I for one have no desire to see this movie.
In my case, the fact they changed the origin story means I’ll never watch it.
That just craps on too many childhood memories...
