BEIRUT The ouster on Wednesday of Egypts elected Muslim Brotherhood government barely a year after it took office represents a significant setback for the Islamist movements that have proved the biggest beneficiaries so far of the Arab Spring revolts.
From Tunisia to war-torn Syria, anti-Islamist activists have begun expressing unhappiness with the religious parties empowered by freedoms the turmoil unleashed. That the backlash has crescendoed in Egypt the Arab worlds political and cultural trendsetter and the birthplace of the Muslim Brotherhood 80 years ago is likely to resonate far beyond, perhaps most forcefully in Syria.
What happens to the Islamists in Egypt will determine their status in the remaining countries of the region, said Jordanian political analyst Labib Kamhawi. This is making them nervous because they know that if they lose in Egypt, they will end up losing everywhere.
It is far too early to write off political Islam as a force in the region, and the Egyptian armys role in forcing President Mohamed Morsis departure sets a potentially worrying precedent for the future of democratically elected governments.
Islamist extremists, in Egypt and elsewhere, may argue that what many are calling a military coup validates the use of violence to achieve their aims. The regimes and monarchies still holding at bay the clamor for greater freedoms will cite the example of Egypt as evidence that elections that empower Islamists will lead to chaos, perhaps braking further progress toward political reform.
But there can be little doubt that the specter of the Arab worlds most populous nation rising up in seemingly unprecedented numbers against an Islamist leader has tainted the Brotherhoods long effort to present itself as a viable alternative to the regions mostly repressive regimes, in ways that it may find hard to redress.

For crissakes! When does this ‘leader from behind’ comprehend a good thing when (and if) he sees it?
When will he stop supporting America's enemies and straight-arming America's allies?
Our idea of who are enemies and allies are quite different from Obama's idea of who they are.
Sad day at Daily Kos and Huffpo.
There is no mystery here. Obama surrounds himself with Muslim Brotherhood advisors. This is who he is. It’s well documented. This is who is running his show. One shudders to remember that Egyptian Huma Abedin, daughter of Muslim Brotherhood inner circle of Egypt, was brought in as Hillary’s close aide to “enlighten” Hillary about the virtues of the Muslim Brotherhood and likely exert pressure for support of Morsi. Hillary and Obama in the box for the the Muslim Brotherhood, the granddaddy of the 20th and 21st century terrorist organizations.
This is true. I remember doing research on this last year. Tunisia was the first country of the Arab spring. The others were Egypt and I believe Libya. In each of these countries, people were sorry they’d let the radical Muslim regimes take over. And in Syria, the Russians swore they weren’t going to let Obama do to Assad what he did to Khadafy.
Didn't Egypt establish the PLO in the early 1960’s.
In the 1950’s the Egyptians created the “Fedayun” bands of terror infiltrators into the young State of Israel.
After losing ~5 wars with the Israelis they made a critical decision (Camp David) to concentrate on becoming a normal (Arab?) state by funding progressive reform.
So far, since 1979, it looks like that is not working for them either...
Obama IS our enemy.
It’s just going to take a lot of people a while to catch up with us to that fact.
If it did not happen in 2008 or 2012 then it is a lost cause. Assume that in about 3 year there will be an official “Barack Obama” day in our calendar.
Nobody wants facts anymore, just nice rhetoric and smiles.
“Morsis ouster spells trouble for regions other Islamist movements”
Here’s hoping...
Would love to see this come back at zero and hilldabeast
April 15th? April 1? Split the difference and make it April 8th?
No worry, Obama will figure out a way to screw things up!
The problem is, that in these last few years, so much significant damage has been done by this administration that the US will find itself in a very precarious situation...
I think not. They will just go into hyper speed on head chopping.
Look folks....get over it....Obama is with our enemies and always will be!!! Morsi and Obama are one and the same, both Satans!!! Morsi in less then a year has destroyed the Egyptian economy and wiped out the most lucrative tourism business in the entire world. Over 400,000 Egyptian citizens have lost their jobs in the tourism industry!!!
Obama has cuddled up to and endorsed the Morsi “Muslim Brotherhood” regime!!! Obama has supported the anti-Israel rants and threats from Morsi and his terrorist thugs. Obama is one of them and is doing exactly the same things to the American economy and people. I am sure the state of Israel is overjoyed that the Egyptian military has thrown Morsi out. Historically, over the past 25 years, or so, the Egyptian miliatry forces have gotten along well with the IDF & IAF. Lesson to be learned here......Obama must go, either by Democrats forcing him to resign or impeachment. The dude, Obama is a traitor to his country, IMHO!!! “Happy Fourth of July”.....not.....until Obama goes!!!
Translation: The Muslim Brotherhood is DEAD and is on its way OUT.
obama’s?
Prediction: Look for Americans to begin to take the USA back via massive tea party protests down the road as well.
