The Egyptian army has set a deadline of 4 p.m. Cairo time for the Muslim Brotherhood government of President Morsi to compromise with the people of Egypt (by stepping down.) Morsi refuses. 18 people were killed and 200 were wounded in clashes at Cairo University last night.
A Washington Post report from Cairo on dueling statements from Morsi and the army:
Waving his hands and shaking his fists in a 45-minute speech on national television late Tuesday, Morsi swore that he was committed to the democratic process that brought him to power and said that any attempts to subvert the constitution were unacceptable.
The army, in turn, posted a message to its Facebook page saying: We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for Egypt and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool.
In his speech, Morsi acknowledged that he had made mistakes during his year in office as Egypts first democratically elected president. But he appealed to Egyptians to give him more time to deal with the countrys problems.

Not yet anyhow. It isn’t over until it is over.
Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee [Blitzer noted that Leahy is ALSO "chairman of the Budget Subcommittee on the State Dept of Foreign Assistance"], said Wednesday the United States was required by law to cut aid to Egypt following a coups detat.
The Morsi government has been a great disappointment to the people of Egypt, and to all who wish Egypt a successful transition to responsive, representative government under the rule of law, he said in a statement. He squandered an historic opportunity, preferring to govern by fiat rather than work with other political parties to do what is best for all Egyptians. Egypts military leaders say they have no intent or desire to govern, and I hope they make good on their promise.
In the meantime, our law is clear: U.S. aid is cut off when a democratically elected government is deposed by military coup or decree, Leahy added. As we work on the new budget, my committee also will review future aid to the Egyptian government as we wait for a clearer picture. As the worlds oldest democracy, this is a time to reaffirm our commitment to the principle that transfers of power should be by the ballot, not by force of arms.

The economic turmoil ripping through capitalism is matched by the crisis of ideas presented by those who rule over us. At Marxism 2013 socialists and activists will come together with some of the best speakers on the left internationally to explore the answers to the burning questions we face.
Can the revolutionary movements in the Arab world offer an alternative to capitalism? Is it possible to avert the coming climate catastrophe? What caused the economic meltdown and how could it end? Will the unions fight over austerity in Britain? What can we learn from the struggles of the past and how should we organise the fightback today?
Marxism 2013 will take place at a time of intense debate in the resistance to austerity and the fight against capitalism. Crucial arguments about both how the struggle can go forward and how to organise are being thrown up and new questions are being raised. Marxism 2013 aims to be a key arena for the debates and discussions on the left.
Come to Marxism 2013 and join the debate.
