Fox and Friends Gretchen Carlson led a panel discussion Tuesday morning addressing the now-controversial speech of Rachel Jeantel, the chief witness for the prosecution in the George Zimmerman trial. Carlson took issue with linguist John McWhorters defense of Jeantels speech as an articulate use of Black English, and asked if such a description was possibly offensive.
Anthropologists, historians, they will say Black English is a language, Democratic strategist Jehmu Greene said, adding:
Its not a language thats gonna get you to graduate from high school, to go to college, to find a job, or to keep a job. We have to stop making excuses for this type of conversation that is happening in our communities. All too often we have leaders, like John McWhorter, talking about the history and talking about where it comes from, but like the slave trade, where this language is based from, it should be a thing of the past. It should be okay for people who have a platform, especially African Americans in the media who have a platform, to say this is unacceptable. This is not how our children should be learning. This is not the best way to move them forward
I assume youll take hits for saying that, Carlson said.
Absolutely, Greene said. Jesse Jackson did when he called it something like garbage dialect.
Years ago one of the Tuskegee airmen spoke at the men’s club breakfast at our church. I was only about 14 or 15 at the time but I clearly remember being surprised at his lack of ebonics.
I live in a suburb and it has taken a whole minute to get them to answer the phone.
Wish they had known that when I lived in Yorkshire, UK. Made no concessions for me, love. LOL! Had to get hubby to translate for about three months.
If businesses can’t get enough people to speak real English, they’ll look to technology to solve this problem. Look at that Dragon software; a Hispanic who jumped the fence three weeks ago should be able to compose a perfect letter in English with it (it takes the incoherent ramblings and tries to structure it into sentences). In my area one of the large chain convenience stores has laid off the older American women that used to make the sandwiches and replaced them with Hispanic drones who you never speak to (they only stare blankly at you if you attempt to do so). You key in what you want on your sandwich (including quantity for ingredients), and on the other side of the counter it is either showing up on a screen either in Spanish or as pictures (I suspect the latter, because many of our illegal aliens here in NJ are illiterate in Spanish).
Business will dedicate untold resources to make money.
When I was a child in Scotland, I spoke barely intelligible broad Scots among my peers, but at home, or among elders, I spoke proper English, grammatically correct, too, or suffered the consequences. Michael Caine would be a case in point...he often portrays the gentry in films and speaks with a very refined accent, but was a slang talking Cockney in real life. Giving those speaking ebonics the benefit of the doubt, maybe when they are with their parents, teachers, authority figures, etc., they speak properly and its just a phase they will grow out of as they mature.
Years ago I worked in a company here in NJ that had several offices in the South, especially Georgia and Virgina. When many of those people came to visit our headquarters up here in NJ, I was pleasantly surprised that many of them were black. Not only was their speech flawless, but in BSing on the phone they had the same issues and concerns as “regular” people. Without meeting them in person I would have never known they were black.
African Americans have long refused to ask the question about why so many African Americans revert to violence and crime. As a young Hispanic woman, I have been looking for an answer to that question regarding members of my own ethnicity.
When misguided Liberal politicians treat human beings like they treat animals in a zoo -- by feeding them, clothing them, housing them, training them and taking care of their medical needs -- then why does it surprise us when those human beings revert to animal-like violence? After all, part of the human experience is to take responsibility for one's actions. When the government takes this responsibility, you no longer know how to behave.
Language, cultural differences and poverty don't cause this. After all, there are many different minority groups that are a segment that are poor but for whom the statistics vary little in terms of criminal activity. And, of course, there have been many poor people in this country for centuries who didn't laugh when they beat up a woman.
This is a result of the "new slavery" -- in which certain segments of society are in chains to the bones of welfare that are thrown to them by some politicians who long for power.
When a large segment of a culture is willing to forsake their longstanding moral and religious views on issues like abortion and the goals of homosexual activists by voting in the pro-abortion or pro-homosexual activist politicians simply because those politicians promise a few more entitlement perks, then that culture will go into a steady decline.
If you don't believe me, then I dare you to walk through the government projects in any major city after 10 PM at night. If you feel any less safe than walking in the suburbs or small-town America, then you aren't being honest with yourself.
Not sure where I found it or what story or comment it was in response to, but seems to back up what you're saying.
‘John McWhorters defense of Jeantels speech as an articulate use of Black English,’
I don’t suppose anyone has ever asked linguist John McWhorter for an example of the inarticulate use of “Black English”. I’d like to see and hear the difference.
“Whenever any one of them from the hood tries to climb out, they are either dragged down by the bros and hoes or ostracized for acting white.”
—
Yep. They are called “oreos”.
.
But the job of a “black leader” is to make excuses and encourage “pay back whitey” for “wrongs.”
And the head “black leader” says NOTHING when his “sons and daughters” riot. Why? See definition of “black leader” above.
Where iz my free helf care at?
I screwed up. I meant that post to someone on a different thread. Sorry about that.
Now it does piss me off when a segment of Duck Dynasty is closed captioned. I never knew Southern was a foreign language. But I guess to the Hollywood liberals it is.
I’ve never seen that; I don’t know what it is.
It may not be closed-captioned for Americans; it may have that so ESL and ebonics speakers can follow.
somebody posted this yd, all I need to say is that its title is “Crackerpiece Theater”:

Must have been not just me. Within a month you hardly ever see anyone at that station...Americans aren't as stupid as some think. Our money goes where it is appreciated...
another station in town now has a line up for gas and coffee. The girls worked there for a while and then went to another station in the next town owned by the same guy that people are using now.....This is a small town of about 4000 people...If the first station was the only one in town, I'd drive to the next town about 8 miles down the road...idiots think they just take our money and give us crappy attitude.....Not great business men....LOL
Ah fot de ho tawt gud!
You inna HEAP o' trouble, dirtBOY!
