The severity of injuries thing troubles me, you can be laying there getting pounded and doing just fine and then the next punch puts you in a coma.
The only thing Zimmerman could do was assume that Martin intended to keep on punching, it wasn't a time for hope and optimism.
Personally I would be intent on putting a stop to the event, whatever it took.

The only thing Zimmerman could do was assume that Martin intended to keep on punching, it wasn't a time for hope and optimism. Yep. It's one thing if a guy takes a swing at you and runs. It's quite another if he's on top, punching away, and there's no indication he's going to stop before you are dead.
