Healthy consumers could see insurance rates double or even triple when they look for individual coverage under the federal health law later this year, while the premiums paid by sicker people are set to become more affordable, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of coverage to be sold on the laws new exchanges.
The exchanges, the centerpiece of President Barack Obamas health-care law, look likely to offer few if any of the cut-rate policies that healthy people can now buy, according to the Journals analysis. At the same time, the top prices look to be within reach for many people who previously faced sky-high premiums because of chronic illnesses or who couldnt buy insurance at all.
Virginia is one of the eight states examined by the Journal and offers a fairly typical picture.
In Richmond, a 40-year-old male nonsmoker logging on to the eHealthInsurance comparison-shopping website today would see a plan that costs $63 a month from Anthem, a unit of WellPoint Inc. That plan has a $5,000 deductible and covers half of medical costs.
By comparison, the least-expensive plan on the exchange for a 40-year-old nonsmoker in Richmond, also from Anthem, will likely cost $193 a month, according to filings submitted by carriers. This concern was first raised about the impact of ObamaCare on California, but it looks like a nationwide phenomenon. Supporters of the law point out that the exchanges also make some consumers eligible for subsidies although subsidies are hardly free; theyre simply a way of passing excesseive cost onto all other taxpayers, along with the increase of costs in their own premiums. The WSJ also notes that eligibility for subsidies is limited, and the benefits thin anyway:

I knew this back when it first came up and the “representatives” turned off their fax machines so that they wouldn’t have to listen to the voters say that We the People do not want it
The WSJ is obviously a racist organization for pointing this out. Any thing that is critical of Obamacare stems from racism.
$5000 DEDUTIBLE, and then it only pays HALF of medical costs? Wow! What a bargain at only $63 per month.
Our president and congress have surely learned to govern against the will of the people.
Thanks for telling us what we already know.
But WSJ: where were your alarms when 0 was about to be elected for the first time? When our elected traitors ‘voted for 0care before they could see what was in it’? When we demanded proof of 0’s elegibility?
Too busy getting those southern borders erased and the existing illegals legitimized I guess.
But one of the many reasons real Americans have traded up to IBD and only use the WSJ for their pet dog.
It’s racially charged which is the ok version of racism as aptly applied to lip accidents from the left or from their mouth pieces bloomberger math.
Here’s another little factoid about the exchanges that has a long fuse ... your exchange subsidy is based upon your 2012 tax return BUT the subsidy will be trued up with your 2014 income after the fact. Had a bad year in 2012 but 2014 turns out good? Look for a surprise in Feb of 2015 when you do your taxes for the first year under Obamacare. Your subsidy will be trued up with actual income and any excess subsidy clawed back. Too late for the midterms, though.
