GM foods are banned from restaurants in the Houses of Parliament despite government claims it is probably safer than other meals.
Government ministers are demanding that ordinary families should abandon their reluctance to eat genetically modified food, however they are banned from MPs plates. This week the food and farming secretary, Owen Paterson, launched an extraordinary propaganda campaign to encourage the nation to accept GM crops and farming.
He bolstered his campaign with claims that some seven million children in the Far East could have been saved from blindness or death in the last 15 years if only people had opened the door to a new form of GM Golden Rice.
However, his efforts were unravelling today amid evidence that GM food is banned from the dinner tables of MPs, while his claims for the GM rice proved to be bogus. The House of Commons Catering service today confirmed that the ban on GM ingredients which dates back to 1998 remains in place as a matter of customer choice. It said: In line with its procurement policy, the House of Commons Catering Service avoids, wherever identifiable, the procurement of foods that contain genetically modified organisms.
... As a result, the minister and fellow MPs leave themselves open to accusations of hypocrisy and complaints that they are telling people to do as I say, not as I do.
Speaking earlier this week, Mr Paterson said: The use of more precise technology and greater regulatory scrutiny probably makes GM organisms even safer than conventional plants and food.

GM foods are owned by companies. Once they replace natural foods we will be totally at their mercy.
Gentically Modified foods: Why One Expert Wants Them Out Of Your Kitchen
All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.
Grow your own and leave us alone to enjoy the fruits of technology, capitalism and thousands of years of genetic manipulation of crops.
Every single bite of food you put in your mouth, since the day you were born, has been modified genetically one way or the other.
So what they are doing now in labs is the same as was done 50 years ago?
hardly
Not an option. Heck in Europe they are trying to outlaw possession of any seeds which aren’t controlled by these companies.
Here in the states they just sue the farmers whose crops have been infected by the modified seeds.
The only benefits at this current time are to the seed patent holders and the chemical industry.
And the farmers who buy them, because of higher yields. And the consumers who benefit from cheaper, more plentiful food.
In 2000, production of golden rice was begun to increase beta-carotene in the crop. Its true that vitamin A deficiency is a huge issue in third world countries, especially with children. Here is a great quote regarding this product: Because of lacking real-world studies and uncertainty about how many people will use golden rice, WHO malnutrition expert Francesco Branca concludes giving out supplements, fortifying existing foods with vitamin A, and teaching people to grow carrots or certain leafy vegetables are, for now, more promising ways to fight the problem.
Right. Instead of giving the people better rice to grow, we should hand them vitamins or make them grow foods they don't eat. Because GMO are so scary, you're better off dying than eating them.
Thanks, you luddite clowns.
Monsanto is trying to outlaw non-Monsanto seeds? That's awful, you have any links?
From one of the links “Under the new law, it will immediately be illegal to grow, reproduce or trade any vegetable seed or tree that has not been tested and approved by a new “EU Plant Variety Agency”, who will make a list of approved plants.” http://www.thelocal.se/discuss/index.php?showtopic=59106
I was in a Cosco store recently, and there was one of those stands where they were handing out free samples. Naturally, I went over, and found that a saleswoman was featuring popcorn made with no GMOs. What is a GMO? I asked.
Oh, theyre bad. They are genetically modified organisms.
I protested that ALL the vegetables we grow are genetically modified from wild strains by selective breeding. All our dog breeds and farm animals are likewise also GMOs. She insisted that such things are bad.
I finally told her that I disagreed. As a matter of fact, I told her, I myself am a GMO, because I am not exactly like any of my ancestors. And if I had not been genetically modified during the last 30 MY or so, I would look very much like unto a chimpanzee.
She looked puzzled. I dont think that she was as genetically modified as I am, and so she was unable to understand my argument.
But anyway, if you fall for this anti-GMO nonsense, you are in with real kooks. Maybe you also believe in alien abductions, or that the Earth was formed in 4004 BC, or that Obamas fake birth certificate is actually real. Or that Obamas father was that Kenyan bloke. Or that wasteful spending helps the economy.
In other words, this is craziness.
Good info...
Just get ready for the Statist Globalist Big Govt types who are taking a break from Group Hugging Obama and his EU trade deal to troll any thread that outs Monsanto.....they are little huffed because Monsanto’s welfare check Farm Bill ain’t getting cashed
A FReindly word of warning: Toddsterpatriot is a Creeper FReeper. Regardless of the proof you provide, he will use the classic Alinsky tactics against you while never providing proof of his own statements. Then he will do a quick search of your posts on other threads and reply to them as well. That’s where the creeper part of the name comes into play.
Thanks, there seem to be more and more of them lately.
Here’s a link to the thread if you want to see what this guy is all about: http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3033358/posts
It all started with my tongue-in-cheek comment about FReepers like him and you can see where that went! One guy told me he’s a psychologist and that I needed to check myself into a loony bin! I actually considered informing the mods when he started searching and responding to my posts on other threads. It’s really kind of creepy.
The established want to restrict the lower classes to buying from them. They regulate against new, small business starts (including agriculture) while clearing the way for their own favored constituents’ established businesses. That’s what much in politics is about.
Yeah, big government is awful. That wasn't the original claim.
Sorry if my ridicule of your unscientific claims made you cry.
Seems you were correct.
