Posted on 06/19/2013 4:41:28 PM PDT by Toddsterpatriot
For the first time in its 27-year history, a prestigious award for enhancing the global food supply has gone to a creator of genetically modified crops, a top scientist at Monsanto. The choice is likely to add more heat to an intense debate about the role biotechnology can play in combating world hunger. Robert T. Fraley, Monsantos executive vice president and chief technology officer, will share the $250,000 World Food Prize with two other scientists who helped devise how to insert foreign genes into plants: Marc Van Montagu of Belgium and Mary-Dell Chilton of the United States.
The announcement was made in Washington on Wednesday, accompanied by a speech from Secretary of State John Kerry.
The prize was started in 1987 by Norman E. Borlaug, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for bringing about the Green Revolution, which vastly increased grain output, and who thought there should be a Nobel Prize for agriculture. The award is given to those who improve the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world.

If Obama can win the Nobel Peace Prize, then this fellow can win a 'food' prize.
Till they put BT into EVERY thing? I`ll take mine without genetically engineered pesticides thank you.
Typhoid Mary wins World Hygiene Prize
Why??? Honor these folks ????
Monsanto winning a Best Food prize is like Kim Kardashian winning a Virginity prize
Love the taste of nicotinoids
Science advances, even if it hurts your feelings.
That's the nice thing about GMOs, they reduce the need for nasty chemicals.
It’s a shame so many conservatives fall for the liberal line on this.....
Yeah...fall for the liberal line like Monsanto getting billions in taxpayer subsidies....or special laws to protect them from their own negligence...yup conservatives support Big Government for Monsanto
True that. Borlaug was a big fan of Monsanto, and many of the people running the massive and pre-eminent R&D at Monsanto today are Borlaug acolytes. Without Borlaug's unique ability for turning theory into practice, and for inspiring others to focus on science that was aimed at solving real problems - not academic and irrelevant problems - there would be a lot more people starving in the world today.
The assorted and sundry Luddites, and scientific illiterates here, who howl, whine and moan about things they don't understand, are oblivious to the fact that when they condemn the work of Monsanto, they are also condemning the life's work of Norman Borlaug - a humble American who saved more lives than any other human who has ever lived.
Without the biotechnology of Beachell and Borlaug, the Green Revolution would not have happened, and a billion less people, or more, would not be alive today because their ancestors would have starved to death as infants or young children.
You have to be able to prove negligence, but proof is just another inconvenience to scientific illiterates like you.
It's a shame we don't have special laws to protect us from your ignorance.
The exact same FReepers show up on every single thread to defend Monsanto. I actually think that they work for them. There can be no reason why a conservative would support global food supply control and giving billions of our tax dollars to a company. It’s frightening to know the level that Monsanto will go to!
If you actually believe that then I as a duly qualified and licensed psychologist tell you that you may be suffering from a serious paranoid delusional disorder. This is no shit. You are very possibly a sick person. I would encourage you to seek professional evaluation at once. Unless you are just BSing for the helluvit.
Go Monsanto. Fed my family for 30y.
Want to cut back on top soil erosion, we’ve got a solution.
Want to cut back on chemical application, we’ve got a solution.
Want to reduce land and feed for milk producing livestock, we’ve got a solution.
What ya got, luddites?
Oh go back to your roost buzzard. Yeah, I’m a 5’ 10” supermodel with a natural honey complexion and bee stung lips. My boobs are real too. See? We’re all so much cooler online. Someone should write a song about that! Maybe Brad Paisley could sing it.
By the way, I noticed you have no defense for their receiving tax dollars. Hmm.
Most conservatives are totally ignorant on the Monsanto issues.
“Want to reduce land and feed for milk producing livestock, weve got a solution.”
Want a better solution than giving yet another corporation (with BFFs on both sides of the aisle) my tax dollars? Reducing the tax dollars I pay even more by ending farm subsidies! Land, feed, milk, etc. all taken care of! Two birds, one stone. Ah, the beauty of the free market.
what’s up next, World Bath Prize?

Monsanto is just a Welfare Queen on Steroids. No real conservative supports Monsanto and its Big Government excesses
” I`ll take mine without genetically engineered pesticides thank you.”
What is wrong with them? Do you know the first thing about them other than other liberals talk them down?
Those bastards! You have a link, or just a feeling?
or special laws to protect them from their own negligence
Can you prove your claim? LOL!
Those Freepers who know more science than liberal idiots must piss you off.
giving billions of our tax dollars to a company.
What tax dollars do they get?
Reducing the tax dollars I pay even more by ending farm subsidies!
Yes! End farm subsidies, end sugar quotas and end the ethanol mandates! What does that have to do with Monsanto or the scientific illiterates who attack them?
Or knee-jerk "business always good" blindness.
I’m not doing your research for you. When I make decisions for myself and my family I gather the info myself. I’m not a liberal who relies on the work, or merely hearsay, of others. As you are on FreeRepublic you know how to use the Internet. Your local librarian can assist you with finding reliable, scholarly research. whitehouse.gov and other .govs have links to legislation that you can read for yourself. Now I’m off to see what my gmo free, heirloom seeded, chemical-free, composted, natural weed barriered, rain watered garden has for today’s lunch and supper! It’s great not relying on Monsanto practices and chemicals to feed my family of four, soon to be five, practically all year even in zone 6b.
“Yes! End farm subsidies, end sugar quotas and end the ethanol mandates! What does that have to do with Monsanto or the scientific illiterates who attack them?”
If you don’t know how the free market system works and how in our current economy Monsanto and farm subsidies are linked, there is no help for you. Take your scientific literacy to DU. I hear they use science all the time to prove global warming and expound upon the benefits of abortion.
You're right, why should you prove your silly claim, I should prove it for you.
Im not a liberal who relies on the work, or merely hearsay, of others.
I know, you're a liberal who makes claims with no proof.
So, now your claim is that Monsanto gets your tax dollars because farmers who get subsidies use that money to buy stuff from Monsanto?
Wow, that's a stretch.
Tell you what, I'll bet that even if farm subsidies ended tomorrow (I can dream, can't I?), Monsanto would still sell stuff to farmers.
Take your scientific literacy to DU. I hear they use science all the time to prove global warming
I'm just as happy mocking global warming idiots as I am mocking you.
“So, now your claim is that Monsanto gets your tax dollars because farmers who get subsidies use that money to buy stuff from Monsanto?”
No that is not what I’m claiming. You need to analyze the free market system a bit more but you will get there if you try. Nice name calling by the way. Rules for Radicals all the way, huh? Seriously though, you need to put down the science books proclaiming a fetus isn’t a baby and can’t feel pain and study up a bit on Adam Smith.
If I do, will that show what tax dollars are going to Monsanto?
Nice name calling by the way.
An idiot by any other name.....
Seriously though, you need to put down the science books proclaiming a fetus isnt a baby and cant feel pain
I don't have any evil science books that make that claim.
Anytime you find proof of your claims, feel free to post them.
Or just run away.
I’ve suggested you do your own work. Gasp! You have yet to practice what you demand of others and provide proof of your opinions. So you make claims, when others suggest otherwise you demand proof without providing your own, and then you ridicule. You dance around the issues. It’s quite funny to witness this from somebody who claims to be scientific minded while calling others idiots. The Monsanto-less beets I just plucked from the ground are splendid, by the way. Looks like the kids will be eating lunch shirtless because I’m not in the mood to soak and destain clothing.
You made a claim, post your proof. Or run away.
I can see which choice you're making.
I’m “twisted” because I dislike my taxes going to support companies that should be supporting themselves? Keep name calling. That will really advance your agenda here on FR. That’s what the few Monsanto supporters here on FR have in common. Nice to see you take the side of somebody who, if his/ her claims are true, practices in a profession that has declared homosexuality is no longer a psychological issue but gun owners need a psychological classification. Sure. I don’t like Monsanto so I don’t use their products. If you like them keep using them. That’s how conservatism works. But don’t use my tax dollars to support an agenda.
You show your proof. There. Now we’re even. Way to bring this down to middle school lunch room rivalry level Mase/Toddsterpatriot/IHeartBigGovernmentSupportingThoseWhoShouldSupportThemselves.
I didn't make a claim about Monsanto receiving or not receiving taxpayer funds. You did.
Will you bother to provide proof of your claim, withdraw your claim or run away?
Way to bring this down to middle school lunch room rivalry level
Middle schoolers don't provide proof, and so far, neither do you. Bring the level back up, repair the damage you caused.
My mother nearly died from a series of reactions to products contaminated with Starlink corn.
That's enough for me.
You’re a hoot. So if I provide you with the info you will change your mind? No. You can’t run around everywhere disagreeing with everybody and then insisting they prove anything to you. As I posted earlier I find my own info and make up my own mind. You need to put on your big boy pants and do the same. Otherwise I’ll just say that I disagree with you for disagreeing with me so now the burden of proof is on you. Have a nice life insisting that everything you dislike be proven to you. I hope people feed you correct info, otherwise things could get scary for you.
Change my mind about what? I'm against corporate subsidies, farm subsidies, sugar quotas, big government and poor science education.
As I posted earlier I find my own info and make up my own mind.
Excellent! You either found the "Monsanto getting taxpayer money" at a site that has good info, at a site that has bad info, or you made it up because it sounds good.
I'll wait for you to post your proof to see which one.
Or you'll run away.
I’m merely using your tactics. Anoying isn’t it? Have a nice day.
Run away now!
