China's state media warned on Saturday that a "counterstrike" against the Philippines was inevitable if it continues to provoke Beijing in the South China Sea, potentially Asia's biggest military troublespot.
The warning comes as ministers from both countries attend an Association of Southeast Asian Nations meeting in Brunei, starting Saturday, which hopes to reach a legally binding code of conduct to manage maritime conduct in disputed areas.
At stake are potentially massive offshore oil reserves. The seas also lie on shipping lanes and fishing grounds.
Both China and the Philippines have been locked in a decades-old territorial squabble over the South China Sea, with tensions flaring after the Philippines moved new soldiers and supplies last week to a disputed coral reef, prompting Beijing to condemn Manila's "illegal occupation".

Are we ready for WWIII?? Zero is having another billion white flags prepared so he’ll be ready to surrender at the first sign of trouble.
Here’s a novel idea. Why can’t they both use that region?
Both have shipped there without problem. Why does any of this have to be a problem now?
Let interests on behalf of any nations in the area drill there.
We have different nations drilling in the Gulf. They can do it too. Big deal...
None of this would be a problem if China would change it’s dirty diapers and join the rest of us in the 21st Century.
Hey Philippines! You used to have the world’s most powerful Navy and Air Force based in the Philippines but you decided you didn’t want them anymore. How’s THAT working out for you?
I don’t know the history of this area and its territorial disputes, but I know it is none of our business.
China media mothers slept with Russian infantry troops.
Anything that’s “yours” is only yours as long as you can hold it. It’s a mean world out there.
I wonder if there are enough islamists in the Philippines for 0bama to decide it is worth him posturing over this threat to one of our putative allies.
In light of the push for Amnesty by American political traitors, no truer words were ever spoken.
If you knew its history then you’d know it is our business.
If you want to know what an Islamic population does to a society, study the Phillipines.
Private armies, bombings, drug trade to the infidels, insurgencies, murderous clan feuds.
Read Tom Clancy’s THREAT VECTOR (835 pages)for another slant on this problem. It’s a real page turner, don’t plan on a good nights sleep!
China numerically has about the same number of submarines as the United States.

And while these are of significantly lower quality than ours, to their neighbors they represent a significant threat.
This being said, after threatening all their neighbors, the thought may have crossed the minds of some of them that were China to start having submarine accidents at sea, with no clear indication of their proximate cause, it would do much to reestablish balance in the region, and help keep the peace.
The actual technique to disappear a submarine could be as easy as some heavy netting and a big chunk of concrete poised on a cliff overlooking a large trench.
Read it over the Christmas holiday.
A page-turner.
Tom Clancy didn’t write a word of it. All his books have been ghost-written since Red Storm Rising, which also was a really good book.
China doesn't want to go north, although Siberia beckons they do not want to get into a missile lobbing game with the Russians. The Russians will put a physics package in the nose cone quickly because they cannot match the Chinese for manpower.
They tried to bully Vietnam a few years ago and got a bloody nose. They see the vast Pacific as the place to expand. They can push Taiwan and Phillipines around because they are comparatively weak. The US has proven to be a poor ally. The US has already abandoned Taiwan. Will Washington go to war over the Spratley's or the Paracels? Doubtful.
I have been making the 1930s Germany comparison for several decades now. I warned what would happen. I warned as it as happening. I am now warning and explaining it as it plays out in real time.
I agree with you.
China is an expansionist nation. It has it’s eyes on bobbles around the planet. We either wake up, or it’s over.
China, perhaps Iran are the only two nations on the planet that are determined to become expansionist and cause global instability. Coupled with North Korea, they both hope it will take down their adversaries a notch before they step in.
China does aspire to have Eastern Russia. As I understand it the Chinese are pulling pretty much the same routine in Eastern Russia that Mexico is pulling on the U. S. It is occupying eastern Russia.
Vlad likes to act like he’s a real sage. I think China has pulled his pants down on this one. They’re occupying his eastern territory, and he’s still acting as their love sick uncle that just wants to make peace in the family.
We are much more Vlad’s common ally, not China.
Yes Russia could give China a major (nuclear) headache, but China has wallop too now. We perfected their gyro and targeting problems for them. Thanks to Bill Clinton...
Well, here we are. It’s a brave new world for everyone but China, still stuck in the 20th Century.
Too bad our leaders have their heads stuck somewhere altogether different.
