Did Barack Obama pick the wrong venue for anti-slavery speech?
The Telegraph ^ | 28 June, 2013 | Colin Freeman

For a black American president on a tour of Africa, it seemed an obvious opportunity for a speech about the evils of slavery. When Barack Obama visited Senegal on Thursday, he headed for Gorée Island, where a crumbling fort is said to have been the key departure point for millions of slaves shipped across the Atlantic.

Yet as the president toured the 18th century building and later spoke of how the visit had allowed him to "fully appreciate the magnitude of the slave trade", historians pointed out that it was probably never used for that purpose at all.

How many Africans were brought over to America from Africa as slaves?

Answer: About 10,000,000 (10 million) Africans were sent to the Americas (North America, South America and the Caribbean). Only about 500,000 (five hundred thousand) ended up in the United States and 4,000,000 (4 million) were sent to Brazil. An unknown but very large number died during the voyage across the Atlantic.

But even one was one too many...

“......historians pointed out that it was probably never used for that purpose at all.”

So, this is just another faux photo moment in the lives of our masters.

Yes, he picked the wrong venue on the wrong side of Africa. Around 17 million Africans were sent to the Arab/Muslim world as slaves over 14 centuries, with Zanzibar being one of the more active departure points. The European/American involvement in slavery lasted about three or four centuries and the Europeans were largely responsible for ending most of the African slave trade.

Obama could have covered many more centuries of the slave trade which involved many more slaves in east Africa where some slavery is still practiced.

What are your sources for the 10,000,000 figure? I’ve heard leftists claim that amount, but I’ve also heard Prof. Adams of Howard University demolish it into oblivion (He studied the ships’ manifests and delivery receipts of the Spanish and Portuguese slavers, among others).

I don’t think there is such a thing as a “good place” for the descendant of slave sellers to make a speech against slavery.

Another faux photo moment - YES. Obama’s whole presidential career has been nothing but one big photo-op.

When told that this site was probably not a major slave-exporting site, Obama said (a la Star Trek):

Obama: I’m a lawyer, not a historian!

To which I say, “That’s debatable”.

Here is a link to a video someone posted a couple of months ago which presents a more complete history of African slavery, highlighting the 1,400 years the Arab/ Muslim world was involved, and also the roles of Elite Africans who captured their fellow blacks and sold them to the Arab slavers. Worth the time for anyone interested in the subject.

It’s what globalism was doing back then.

Globalism has slaves today, they’re just in dead-end low-paying jobs or in debt or both.

Certain people visiting a nearby historic mansion speak of visiting the “slave quarters” as they walk to the utility out-building (a kitchen) or down to the basement (dairy and wine cellar).

Oh and factually too... it was not like whites went into the jungles and caught blacks for slaves. Most were brought to the slave traders by other black or by MUSLIM/arab slave traders.

Have the blacks attempted to get reparations from those who captured them? Of course not and that needs to be taught to the blacks who hold it against whites in general for slavery ever happening.

If they have a problem with their relatives having been slaves, then they should sue those who traded in slaves. Sadly this is treated like the drug problem. With the help of the government it is the general tax paying citizens who are being blamed for something they had nothing to do with a problem someone else profited from.

Even if I had the money... like most people I was not involved, nor were any of my relatives so take your crying and complaining somewhere else. Worse yet, the average black has more opportunities to get some sort of assistance or favoritism in today's society than the average white does.
