House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell E. Issa said Friday he believes the woman at the center of the IRS scandal waived her Fifth Amendment rights when she came before the committee last month.
I have considered the matter deliberately, including the opinion of Lois Lerners lawyers, Mr. Issa said,
Ms. Lerner, director of tax-exempt organizations for the IRS, began the witnesses testimony by denying that she acted improperly and then invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.
I have not done anything wrong. I have not broken any laws, she said. I have not violated any IRS rules or regulations, and I have not provided false information to this or any other congressional committee.
Mr. Issa dismissed Ms. Lerner from the witness table, but Rep. Trey Gowdy, South Carolina Republican, objected, saying that since she made a brief statement in her defense, that effectively waived her right to invoke the Fifth Amendment.

Apparently Ms. Lerner was too clever by half.
Hilarious, FRiend ;^)
Yep...he said it and FReepers repeated it, LOUDLY!!
Okay, Issa...now what?
Didn't a dem invoke "macarthy" during a roll call?
He did it in a very snarky way, IIRC. It was too cute by half, IIRC.
Yeah, I did hear about that... I hope it settles down over there.
Go Cooch!!!
Rep Gowdy can say all day long, but the witness will invoke and has a right to do so. it is incumbent on the state or congress in this case to introduce evidence to the contrary and pursue justice that way. or prove her statements are not true.
she can say all day long, “i did nothing wrong. i will not answer, that question on fifth amendment grounds.”
that is the reality of the situation.
giving her immunity to get to higher ups will end the search because she will be immune to prosecution and the one who instigated the scrutiny.
we need more evidence and then threaten prosecution.
even on circumstantial evidence. make her want to talk.
teeman
No, worse.. You cannot give your sound bite to the state run media then say you will not talk.
wrong
I think she knows she is free from harm regardless what happens. Holder is head of DOJ.. 0bama is his boss.. SCOTUS has been blackmailed to give 0bama his way.. We’re screwed every which way you look at it. Congress’ citing of Holder with ‘Contempt of Congress’ charge means nothing.
Issa’s panel vote clears path for Lerner’s return (Dershowitz statments on Lerner at odds w/ Dems?

"Well, yeah dude! Now what are you gonna do about it?"
You forgot to add: “...and blah, blah, blah” and the end of your post.
:-)
R2z
how so?
she made a statement and also testified about a document.
Meh, two dopes who forwarded stupid emails then said “oh, I’m so computer illiterate”....but NAACP isn’t getting the traction they hope for, I think. Being in the only “minority majority” district, we are screwed regardless ( thank you, Voting Rights Act) and our only hope is the other Supes hold the line on spending...
“Good grief!!!
Thats Gowdy, you POS iPad.....”
I laughed out loud. Thanks!
right, which makes the onus of proving her wrong on the congress... when they ask, she will plead the fifth and they will hold her in contempt, but unless they find hard evidence to counter her refusal to speak, they will have to let her go...
