A Vatican official was arrested Friday by Italian police for allegedly trying to bring 20 million euros ($26 million) in cash into the country from Switzerland aboard an Italian government plane, his lawyer said.
Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, already under investigation in a purported money-laundering plot involving the Vatican bank, is accused of fraud, corruption and slander stemming from the plot, which never got off the ground, attorney Silverio Sica told The Associated Press.

“Francis has made clear he has no tolerance for corruption or for Vatican officials who use their jobs for personal ambition or gain. He has said he wants a “poor” church and a church that is for the poor, one that goes out to the “peripheries” to minister to those most needy. He has also noted, tongue in cheek, that “St. Peter didn’t have a bank account.””
The Pope needs him some bodyguards to protect from his own inner circle
This type of corruption must have had something to do with Benedict’s stepping down, not in the sense that he participated in it, but rather in the sense that he found himself increasingly unable to take it on. Perhaps Frncis will be the great reformer. With all the problems the American bishops and Catholics face, corruption in Rome only complicates everything.
It’s a mighty machine to have to take on.
For example, let’s look at the Rent Boy Scandal.
The allegations were rejected by the Vatican. Cardinal Agostino Vallini, head of the Catholic Vicariate of Rome, said the priest made false claims out of a desire for vengeance and personal resentment.
But this same Cardinal ignored claims against a child molestor

So, will the Pope really look into the Rent Boy Scandal or will he allow Vallini to say there is nothing to see here...move on.
Interesting claims in the past about sex rings and Satanism by previous clergy.
It’s not like this is a new claim.
I think that’s one of the reasons he’s not living in that apartment in the Vatican.
In my opinion, it needs to be looked into. The sooner, the better. However, I don’t know enough about how corruptions would be prioritized if the whole house stinks. So, undoubtedly, entrenched evil will take time to be dislodged. The longer it takes for some things, the greater risk of accusations of complicity. The press will be all over that since one of their agendas is clear.
Increasingly, I find myself looking beyond the individual acts of corruption and seeing the systemic attack of evil both from without and within. I understand that each act needs to be dealt with but there is also a larger process at work here which looks like spiritual warfare to me.
“This type of corruption must have had something to do with Benedicts stepping down,”
This is what I have read, that he was given a 300 page internal report on the serious problems in the Vatican, and they were so bad that he knew he was too old and weak to take on the power structure in Rome, so he had the report locked up and he resigned within a few weeks and the reasoning being he needed someone like Francis in there to take on these problems.
I think they have chosen the right man for the job.
“I think thats one of the reasons hes not living in that apartment in the Vatican.”
Good point!
