Controversy is heating up over an administration plan to drastically reduce the amount of federal lands available for oil shale development in the American West.
The Bush administration had set aside 1.3 million acres for oil shale and tar sands development in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. The new Bureau of Land Management plan cuts that amount by two-thirds, down to 700,000 acres, a decision that has prompted industry outrage.
"What they basically did was make it so that nobody is going to want to spend money going after oil shale on federal government lands," said Dan Kish, Senior Vice President of Institute for Energy Research.

Journalism school teaches spelling not math.
This does though
The Green River Formation contains the largest oil shale deposits in the world. It has been estimated that the oil shale reserves could be equal up to 3 trillion barrels (480 billion cubic metres) of shale oil, up to half of which may be recoverable by shale oil extraction technologies (”cooking” kerogen).[11][12][13][14][15] However, the above quoted estimate of ‘recoverable’ oil is in doubt, and challenged, by many renowned geologists because the technology for converting rock into an oil from the Green River shale deposit has not been developed, and it has never been profitably implemented at any significant scale

If companies drill on federal land, the tax take is only from the companies. If they are forced to drill on private land, Big Broke Government gets to tax the companies and the private land owners....and you know they need the money to buy free stuff for their voters.
The real problem is that most of the US is owned by the government and run by the BLM, which is the degenerate, retarded offspring of the IRS and US Fish and Wildlife.
Freedom.
Stop the leviathan government from destroying our nation.
“1.3 million to 700,00 is now a 2/3rds reduction. Who writes this crap?”
I think it is what they are now teaching in school...or the fact that it’s nearly impossible to fire an incompetent teacher unless they are espouse conservative values.
What makes it so apparant that the globalist elitist RINOs are only interested in cheap labor is the fascinationn they have with creating hispanic populations so large that they don't assimilate.
The proof is in the "Republicans" not going for the black vote. We support US citizens over non-citizens getting jobs. That's certainly not racist. Thinking blacks and successful blacks are finally getting it that the blacks are being replaced by hispanics. They also live with what we see in the news every day. That would be that as hispanics start moving into challenged black neighborhoods, violence happens between the groups.
Romney writing off minority lower income votes was either really dumb or really geared toward losing.
“they are espouse”
...obviously I had an incompetent English teacher.
The US could lower domestic and world energy prices in 24 hours. Here is how:
1) Okay the Keystone pipeline. Hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil a day from Alberta and North Dakota would flood the domestic US market. More supply means lower prices. Just the announcement of the pipeline's construction would spook speculation and cause prices to fall.
BONUS: 15,000 construction jobs immediately created.
2) End boutique blending of gasoline. This is expensive and unnecessary. The environmental benefits are dubious at best. Freeing refiners from this regulation would lower prices immediately.
3) End ethanol subsidies, import duties on ethanol, and regulations requiring refiners to blend it into their motor fuels. This would certainly lower corn prices and make many food products cheaper.

Abstract Using a geology-based assessment methodology, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated a total of 4.285 trillion barrels of oil in-place in the oil shale of the three principal basins of the Eocene Green River Formation. Using oil shale cutoffs of potentially viable (15 gallons per ton) and high grade (25 gallons per ton), it is estimated that between 353 billion and 1.146 trillion barrels of the in-place resource have a high potential for development

Just like when Clinton locked up the coal.
Not surprised. The mineral rights are already gone because the are collateral for all the money we are borrowing.
Green River Shale formation has been under testing for a very long time. The petroleum cannot be produced by only drilling, even with horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing.
Previous attempts of this type formation involved mining, crushing the rock releasing Kerogen that was made into a syncrude suitable for an existing refinery.
Shell has been running a pilot program in the area for a long time. They have found by cooking the shale while still in the ground, what gets released is a light oil, esentially processed in place.

Just like the Canadian Oil sands don’t actually produce crude oil (it is bitumen) and it cannot be produced by drilling alone (they use steam assisted gravity drain, or mining), it really doesn’t matter. Like Bakken, Eagle Ford, etc it is more expensive to produce than traditional drilling. But after the products are produced and processed, my truck doesn’t tell the difference in the gasoline.
More liberal actions to appeal to environMENTALists, for votes.
Another bad idea to close it off from production. But it would also be a bad idea to subsidize it like Carter first did.
Yep. I knew all that. It’s unfortunate this stuff is called shale oil because it invariably gets confused with the shale oil and gas being cracked now.
