George Enescu (1881-1955) was the greatest composer to come from Romania. His first instrument was violin, and he was to become a concert violinist. His early training came from those who had worked with Brahms, but his conservatory training came in Paris from Massenet and Faure. During his conducting years, he worked in the US (New York) and Paris and settled in Paris after the war.
His best known piece is a teenage work, a pops concert item for orchestra that is classified as classical music for people who hate classical music.
Enescu: Romanian Rhapsody #1 in A, Op. 11
What we will hear next Saturday is a work for trumpet and piano, perhaps the greatest piece in that tiny category. It has a lot of French in it, which should not be a surprise.
Good evening! ;)
Thanks, Publius, for the heads up...should be quite the “show”.
