Union boss Karen Lewis blames ‘rich white people’ for Chicago school district woes

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis is full of excuses for why the city’s schools are hemorrhaging money, failing to educate students, and laying off teachers by the hundreds.

During her tenure as union head, Lewis has blamed Chicago Public Schools’ problems on Mayor Rahm Emanuel, charter schools, standardized tests, bankers, venture capitalists, a lack of funding and “a culture of fear.”

During a recent speech to the City Club of Chicago, Lewis focused on her two most inflammatory excuses for CPS’ failures: “racism” and “rich white people.”

“When are we going to address the elephant in the room? When will there be an honest conversation about the poverty, racism and inequality that hinders the delivery of a quality education product in our school system?” Lewis asked the decidedly upscale audience.

“When will we address the fact that rich, white people, think they know what’s in the best interest of children of African Americans and Latinos—no matter what the parent’s income or education level,” she said, according to SubstanceNews.net.

After blaming the district’s problems on white people and literally calling for billions in new taxes, Lewis pushed back against perceptions she’s a far-left extremist.

“There is nothing radical about me other than I want each and every student in Chicago to get the best education we have to offer–an equal education,” Lewis declared.

I have raised a similar question in Seattle, where there are periodic accusations that school discipline is unfairly meted out to minorities by racist white teachers and administrators, and where the educational needs of minorities are supposedly not met. But some of the recent superintendents were black, and the teachers are presumably mostly white, Democratic liberals, and the teachers' union supports liberal Democrats. So if all these liberals are running the show, how is it possible that the entire system is supposedly characterized by racism and the neglect of minority interests?

That's the hilarity of the racism racket. Blacks complain that whites are racist when they leave black areas and take their tax money that should be spent in black areas. In reality, whites are just fleeing the increased crime, deterioriating education, and anti-white racism.

Yet when whites start to move back into these areas we here the same agitators complaining that this gentrification is racist because it's whites taking over a black area.

There is no winning. Whites are racist if they leave a black area, and whites are rcist if they being to move into a black area. When an area is overwhelmingly white it's considered somehow wrong and not diverse. When an area is overwhelmingly black it's considered somehow empowering and diverse.
