BERLINWhen Barack Obama last visited Berlin back in 2008, Constanze Fröhlich felt like she was part of history. He was about to become the first black presidentI wanted to support that, the 35-year-old university researcher told Yahoo News. It was really amazing so many people were there. Back then, in a surprising outpouring of Teutonic affection for Obama, a euphoric crowd of 200,000 turned up to hear the Democratic presidential contender speak in the German capital. People of the world: Look at Berlin, where a wall came down, a continent came together, and history proved that there is no challenge too great for a world that stands as one, he told the rapturous masses. This city, of all cities, knows the dream of freedom. But five years later, Germanys love affair with the U.S. president has gone cold. Obama can still expect Chancellor Angela Merkel to give him a grand reception on his official two-day visit. But his high-profile speech on Wednesday in front of the citys Brandenburg Gatealmost exactly 50 years after John F. Kennedys historic Ich bin ein Berliner addresswill be given to a vetted audience of only a few thousand. And its doubtful hundreds of thousands would have turned up to listen to Obama had it been open to the public anyway. Average Germans these days appear at best mildly disillusioned and at worst deeply angry with the man who promised hope and change. I thought it was great that he became president. But theres more distance now. Hes been consumed by daily politics, said Fröhlich.

It’s always hard bumping head first into reality.
No free concert and beer this time around.
I think she meant Daley politics.
Germans could have a Black Muslim president/prime minister. All they have to do is vote for one.
In fact, every European country could do so. Why were they so happy the USA was the first one to do so?
Even the countrys biggest newspaper, Bild, mocked his enthusiastic campaign slogan Yes we can! by changing it to Yes, we scan. Can a FReeper who knows translate that into Spanish? Just curious.
Maybe we can engineer an exchange ala what they used to do in the cold war at check point charlie. We could exchange His Excellency for Putin???
Schadenfreude.
WTH? I thought he was “just” going to Ireland and 3 countries Africa... I guess he’s going for the Grand Tour.
“He was about to become the first black president...”
How is being a skin color an accomplishment, or something to be proud of?
Going to Berlin to get more tips from ex-Stasi agents, no doubt.
Just because they were laughing at us. Not happy for us.
Too bad these scandals didn’t come to light last year , Zero wouldn’t be in the WH today.
This is why I am extremely distrustful of Europeans as a group. Many of them are statist/leftists/fascists/collectivists. It is part of their DNA.
Remember how they swooned over Obama in 2008? Remember how they mouthed the anti-Bush cliches? Remember how they gave Obama a highly politicized “Nobel Prize” after 2 weeks in office?
My eTranslator says: “Sí, nos exploración.”
Wasn’t there a large, free concert after his first speech/blathering?
We visited Germany/ friends right after Obama was elected. When we got there, we felt liked we’d escaped from a prison. I told our ‘daughter’ - ‘Obama is really a terrible man.’ My husband later heard her say, in German, to her husband, “Don’t talk about politics with them.” We figured they must really like him. I bet they don’t now....
Si Podemos
Si Escaneamos
Odd that Putin now sounds like the more responsible leader. But I’d take almost anyone for Zero!
