Ontario couple finds 400-year-old skeleton, gets $5,000 bill

A Canadian couple who recently stumbled upon a 400-year-old skeleton is now saddled with a $5,000 bill, the Star reports.

-snip-

Ontario police, who cordoned off the area, called up forensic anthropologist Michael Spence to examine the site. Spence told the Star that the skeleton is likely that of a 24-year-old aboriginal woman who died in the late 1500s or early 1600s. Spence then contacted the Registrar of Cemeteries, which told Sauve that she and Campbell would have to hire an archeologist to examine the rest of the backyard—at their expense.

According to the Star, property owners are legally responsible to pay for such an assessment "if human remains are found on their land."

-snip-

“This is awful,” said Sauve. “God forbid you have a murder victim, and you cover them up.”

Oh, no you don't want that. Just ask Hank Hill what happened when Peggy found a supposed Native American artifact and the college tore up his immaculate yard.

Neah.
They have to hire an archeologist so that he can make a report that will determine if the state needs to seize the rest of their property as an archeological site.

24 years old ... really? Not 20 or 25 or early 20s or mid 20s?

She was found with her perfectly-preserved birthday cake with 24 candles. Frosting spelled out Happy Birthday, Ugg.

Just like in Medieval times, when a person found a body, depending on the circumstances, they may be required to pay a finder’s fee.

So, best case scenario is that his back yard will be dug up and he’ll have to replant. Worst case scenario is they will say he is on a sacred Indian burial ground and evict him from his own home?

WTF did they count, tree bone rings?

No. They looked at her pelvis.

Look for the pubic symphysis, which is the joint located in the pelvis. The older the person at death, the more pitted and craggy these bones will be. Forensic anthropologists will compare this against a database of standard markers to learn the age of the skeleton.

“Now if you find fresh gold, by all means, run to the EPA, media, etc. I'm sure the government is not as interested in the newer stuff.”

Don't be so sure. The USG confiscated 80 million worth of gold coins that a family found in their fathers safety deposit box. The coins were from the time when FDR confiscated all personal gold. The USG reasoning according to the article
“ Jacqueline Romero, assistant U.S. attorney in Philadelphia, explained that the coins legally belonged to the government after Franklin Delano Roosevelt ordered citizens to exchange their gold for cash in an effort to keep the banks afloat during the Great Depression.

“Those coins were all in a vault and were supposed to be melted,” she asserted.”

In simpler terms “ we will tolerate no uppity peasants in possession of the Kings gold” so instead of SSS its MCS
Melt
Recast
Shut up

Smart policy.

Years ago, MI ran an ad campaign on TV - “If you see this endangered snake in your yard, call DNR, quick!”

I laughed so hard I cried.
