Flying has obtained information from a law enforcement source about the federal program that detains pilots upon their arrival at their destination airports and searches their airplanes. Training for the program was conducted via an aviation drug interdiction class sponsored by HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area), a government organization that is a conglomerate of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to fight, as the name implies, drug traffic.
...airplanes are approached often at gunpoint and usually by local law enforcement, who detain them until the Citation lands and federal agents arrive on scene. They are then ramp checked and they have their airplanes searched.
...pilots were to be treated as though they had no right to refuse the search. What they taught law enforcement officers and agents was that all aircraft can be detained since they all fall under the . . . authority of the FAA. He continued that, this in effect gives them complete search authority of any aircraft.

Except if they are muslim or gay airplanes...
Another victim of the WOD. How much power are we willing to give the government in order to stop people from smoking a doobie and eating Cheetos?
Because airplanes are under the jurisdiction of the FAA the pilots lose all 4th Ammendment rights according to the LEOs doing the training. Pathetic. Using this logic the Feds can.search almost anything without a warrant.
Interesting.
I cannot locate the Article/Section of the U.S. Constitution which states that the 4th Amendment does not restrict the powers of the FAA.
Doesn’t sound legal to me. I wonder if they have tried to use any of what they found in court?
Most likely, the Feds are looking forward to the opportunity to confiscate an airplane.
Can’t hardly wait for tsa and dhs to start doing random stops and searches on the interstates. That should be a barrel of laughs. My wife looked at me real funny when I mentioned that to her. It’s comin’. Will we have to file trip plans kinda like flight plans in the future? Obtain and pay for permits for excess CO2 emissions for the trip?
The FAA the can search an aircraft. Everyone else needs a warrant.
they don't need airplanes if they are light enough in the loafers....
Ah yes, the unbounded privileges of the War On Drugs.
Wouldn’t it be easier to call in a SWAT team to dispatch the annoying pilot?
Because of sequestration, Oboingo and crew threatened EAA to pony up $450,000 for Controllers at Oshkosh...
EAA bent over.
It won't be the 1st time, they will continue to pay the vig, like the Resturant Owner in Goodfella's IMHO.
Dangerous president set here IMHO...
“The FAA the can search an aircraft. “
But only in relation to air worthiness, not for criminal investigation for violations of laws outside the FAR.
LOL ! this is Hugh and Serious too ! LOL !!!
This would be like saying your house is connected to a street that is connected eventually to a federal highway so they can search your house.
