The White House announced Thursday that the Obama administration has conclusive evidence that Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime has used chemical weapons against his opposition, killing up to 150 people in the last year and crossing what President Obama has called a "red line" that would lead to greater American involvement in the crisis.
It was not immediately clear what the next U.S. move would be, but a statement by Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes said that the use of chemical weapons by Syria has changed the Presidents "calculus."

To make sure I understand this. The rebels are getting their butts whipped and JUST NOW the president figures out that chem weapons are being used.
it’s as if Obama is the leader of al-Qaeda in America.
Barack is backing those most threatening to Israel.
So, Bert... is your position that America should spend treasure it doesn’t have to help boot Assad from power? That bit about “dealing with the al-Qaeda elements once Assad is gone”... tell us again how well that has worked so far in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt, etc...
Since that old POS lost in 2008, it seems McCain's primary mission in life has been to help Obama to succeed.
Well... due to circumstances beyond Assad's control (like being pursued by Rebels armed by the US), his troops were forced to improvise. The chemical weapons were cans of bug spray attached to large bottle rockets. (/sarc)
Well, that stuff is dual use ~ particularly when you toss the bug spray can in the campfire ~ that’ll take out somebody roasting a marshmallow ~ just like greasy shrapnel!
Actually it has worked pretty good. AQ is not in power anywhere. They got their asses royally kicked in Mali where they were very strong and dangerous. The French did them in.
I do not favor and did not suggest that we, the USA, become involved in Syria. I would suggest extending assistance to those already involved, Turkey and the GCC. They have air and troop capabilities that can doom Assad.
There is a tendency on Free Republic to over weight AQ and underweight the real power..... the money class
>>>>I would argue that the presence of AQ in Syria is considered not great enough to overcome the primary rebel presence. AQ is there but not the controlling faction.
When Assad is gone, AQ will be dealt with<<<<
Are you really that naive and think Obama’s regime competent enough to handle a controlled chaos?
There are probably some idiots in administration who think they are but they can’t handle a thing.
If you want to see how good they are at it just look at Benghazi and all the blood of Middle East Christians on their hands.
Saddam Hussein, Mubarak and Q-duffy were actually peacemakers in Middle East who kept savages in check. You can say all you want on how bad they were but it is all relative. None of them killed Jews and Christians just for fun of it and they kept their cesspools civilized as far as possible considering feral population. Violence and dictatorship were needed to handle their people who sees liberty as a freedom to rape and pillage, aggression against more savage neighbors was justified for that same reason.
McCain, Obama are amateurs. They have no idea of Middle Eastern realities and aren’t even in a class of dictators they are opposing with superior force.
Assad is literally a last one standing. There won’t be any peace and love in Middle East after his regime is gone. No arab girls in bikini and blue jeans, no beer at bars, no music, no churches, rock concerts and TV shows. It will be all beheading and stoning and hate rallies on a daily basis.
If Obama or McCain think it is good and they can control it they are simply dumb. No matter how much $$$ they’ll send there America is first to blame for these savages.
Israel won’t stand an emerging massive savage caliphate incorporating the GDP of all the North Africa and Middle East in a long run as well.

Could Syria ignite World War 3? two Muslim ideologies suck in the world’s superpowers

Can’t talk about this stuff..............
Any chemical weapons were shipped in by the Russkies from stocks sold to good ‘ol Saddam back in the 90’s. BUT. He didn’t have any (FOR US TO FIND)’cause Saddam shipped them to Syria befo’ the waah.
Bush lied, remember? Ain’t no chemical weapons. “We ain’t GOT no steenking chemical weapons.”
I have no faith in Obama at all. In the Syrian context, he and therefore us, are mostly irrelevant.
The direction comes from the coalition of Turkey and the GCC Arabs.
The decision that Assad must go was made by them .
I think the effort actually began sometime ago. Recall if you will that it was reported here that 20,000 of our arms were stolen from a depot in Kuwait. That is a comical explanation for arming the rebels
Arming Al Qaeda.
Treason.
Blatant treason.
Where’s Congress? Where are the Republicans?
Obama needs to be impeached and imprisoned TODAY.
To make things clear I have no faith in Turkey and Arabs too. United States, China, Russia are relevant. They have levers against every side involved.
Your faith is not relevant either. The facts and reality are as I have stated.
Don’t forget, Obama and his minions are lefties. When they say that they will respond to events like this, that may well mean it’s time for them to start writing sternly worded letters to Assad. If that fails, then it’s time to break out the big guns: A new UN resolution.
In retrospect, this becomes more probable and logical all the time. The Current Occupant of the White Hut has certainly displayed his allegiances from time to time.
Quote - “I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”
Can’t get much uglier than this.
>>>>Your faith is not relevant either. The facts and reality are as I have stated.<<<<
I agree that Turkey is a factor but Turkey is no more than a useful idiot in this game. Turks has lived quite an opulent lifestyle for a Muslim nation, thanks to a secular Kemalism which did wonder to society and economy for the last century.
Turkish islamists resemble American liberals on so many levels.
Both has their living quality due to liberty and free enterprise but hates these principles and dreaming for islamism the first and communism the latter.
And both has no idea what the real islamism and communism is.
Turks also thinks they are advanced enough to rule a Caliphate and see an opportunity to restore an Ottoman empire due to their cultural and technological superiority over Arabs.
The problem is they are wrong and civilization has no chance to prevail teaming with savagery.
Turkish people has a lot to lose in this game.
When they allow Muslim refugees into the country, there has to be a plan as to where they are given refuge like in a chess game.
All of that might be true. However, the coalition is in control and will either win or lose.
The ultimate fight is against Iran.
Syria is the battlefield.
