The new Ethan Hawke thriller The Purge was number one at the box office during its opening weekend, but critics are slamming the film for its thinly veiled commentary against the National Rifle Association and Tea Party groups.
The plot brings moviegoers to the near future where in 2022 a new regime has come to America. The "New Founders" have taken over the country and practically eliminated unemployment crime, and want.
One of the ways this new political movement has brought on such an idyllic society is to allow one night a year when any and all violence, even murder, is legal. Citizens are allowed to "purge" their basest tendencies during that one lawless night.

I wonder if everyone runs around screaming ‘Festival! Festival!’ as they do their deeds? Star Trek did this exact plot line in 1967. Ah well - originality is overrated.
You read my mind. “The Return of the Archons”
I didn’t pick up on the “thinly veiled” commentary against the NRA. If these people didn’t own guns their goose would be cooked...
I haven’t seen the movie.
No it doesnt!!! Did you watch it at all? For starters, the neighbors are jealous as hell because Ethan Hawke is successful. The last 10 or so minutes are an indictment of socialism! That plastic looking blonde saying “you are too successful, you made too much money, for that you must die” and how they were willing to murder the wife and kids and they kept saying “you must sacrifice your life for the good of society”.
Or, maybe, there is less legal liability or moral ambiguity about reporting on local French crime and Canadian crime.
You don't remember the car barbecues, or the Rock Machine?
I haven’t seen the movie. Also, I did not write the article. If you disagree with the premise of the article, go to the site and post a comment to the author.
I haven’t seen the movie, but I understand that the premise is there is one night a year reserved for lawlessness. I don’t own a gun, but under those circumstances I would. I’m not sure “The Purge” is an effective argument against the NRA. The NRA supports the rights of individuals to protect themselves — particularly when the civil authorities won’t do the job.
Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean that they are not out to get you!
You are much more likely to die at the hands of a government official, than you are of dying by accident or natural causes.
The soviets could only dream of the level of control that the USfedgovmonster has over its subjects, and yet, the sheep are perfectly willing to lead to slaughter for for free government handouts and influence.
I noticed one element that the critics might have missed. At least some of the violent attackers in the movie wear masks that seem to be taken from the Guy Fawkes masks used in the movie V for Vendetta, but more importantly, by the computer hacker group Anonymous.
This is important, because if anything, Anonymous stands for a “more chaotic libertarianism”. Many of them seem to want a minimalist government, even less of a government than conservatives favor.
This being said, what the film is saying is that, “Only liberal Democrats can be trusted. Anyone else in power will lead to savagery.”
Detroit had Devil's night, and it didn't work for them.
Landru commands us.
There was a study that found that violent crime such as assaults and robberies went down the weekends of the release of violent movies. The violent types watched the high action and horror movies like “Saw” and “Elm Street”, causing crime to decrease that initial day.
Are you of The Body? The IRS wants to know.

I thought that plot sounded familiar.
