Pa. girl who took on donor rules gets transplant

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A 10-year-old girl whose efforts to qualify for an organ donation drew public debate over how donated lungs are allocated was getting a transplant Wednesday, her family said.
Sarah Murnaghan, who suffers from severe cystic fibrosis, was receiving the transplant Wednesday at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, a family spokeswoman said.
Her health was deteriorating when a federal judge intervened on June 5, giving her a chance at the much larger list of organs from adult donors.
The case could bring change for other children, as another cystic fibrosis patient at the same hospital has also gone to court to be added to the adult donor list. The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network says 31 children under age 11 are on the waiting list for a lung transplant.
Murnaghan's mother, Janet, said in a Facebook post that the family was "overwhelmed with emotions" and thanked all her supporters.
"Today is the start of Sarah's new beginning and new life!" she wrote.
Last week, federal Judge Michael Baylson in Philadelphia ruled that Murnaghan of Newtown Square, Pa., and 11-year-old Javier Acosta of New York City should be eligible for adult lungs.

Who was the ADULT on the list that got bumped so this 10 year old could go to the front of the line?
Is it ok if the person who was going to get these lungs dies, so that the little girl lives?
Will we ever know the name of the person who was NEXT on the list to get the transplant, but was bumped for this girl?
Lesson: Don’t like the rules, cry to the media and government until you get your way. What happens if the girls body rejects the lungs (I hope not)and she dies....WHO DO THE PARENTS SUE?

Yes, this lovely little girl deserves the prayers for her successful surgery from the whole nation. Conversely, I hope Sebillius life is somehow foreshortened. She is pure evil! I seldom see someone who has all the characteristics for being pure evil. When I saw the news on TV this morning about this breakthrough, it made me cry!

Man you are cold! And probably never been a parent. I am almost 73. I have three children and five grandchildren. I would gladly give any one of them any part of me in order that they might have the opportunity for a full life, even if it meant the end of mine. This little girl had no control over this disease, whereas a lot of adults have need of lung transplants due to inappropriate lifestyle choices. Beyond that, they have had a chance at life that this child hasn’t. Maybe you could apply to be Sebillius’ assistant.
I hope Sebillius life is somehow foreshortened.

I believe in “what goes around comes around” and it will. Sebillius will pay for the evil she has wrought. What we bind on earth will be bound in Heaven. What we loose on earth will be loosed in Heaven.
The system will eventually ration other people to death who won’t be so lucky to get national publicity to help save their lives.

Actually, I think this was about that a 10 year old couldn’t be on the list in the first place.

All her parents asked was that she be able to get on both lists, not go to the top
the top of the list is a doctor and committee decision (still a death panel). So apparently she was sicker and better match for those lungs today than anyone else on the list
If she was 18 months older there would be nothing to whine about, she’d be an “adult”
that decision to keep kids her age weight and height off the adult list is based on now outdated medical data about fitting lungs to small bodies. It will take the government years to review to change their data
which do you think is faster - medical research finding new procedures, or rewriting govt regulations?
How many transplants did she miss in the past 18 months that might have given her better odds of survival without having to wait until she was 2 weeks from death?

Well said, and the fact that she was able to receive and make it through the transplant procedure, proves the policy is outdated.
