Schools in the state of California will soon be required to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms of their preference.
A bill being discussed in the state senate would mandate that schools have bathrooms and locker rooms that are fully equipped for transgender students, as well as requiring the schools to allow transgender students to take part in sports and other activities of the gender of their choosing.
Assembly Bill 1266 is aimed at prohibiting discrimination against transgender students in the states school districts, Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco), the bills sponsor, told The Christian Post.
The bill, which the state assembly passed last month, is expected to pass in the Democratic state senate and be signed into law by Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown.
Supporters of the bill believe that it will help end discrimination against transgender students.
Its about ensuring transgender students, just like all students, have a fair chance to be themselves and succeed at school, Melissa Goodman, a senior staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, told the Los Angeles Times.
Among those opposing the legislation is the California Catholic Conference, who said that the bill is extraneous because laws preventing discrimination against transgender students are already in place in California.
Our legislature tends to get involved in things that are better handled in local school districts, said Carol Hogan, a spokeswoman for the conference, told the Los Angeles Times. One size does not fit all.
Similar policies are already in place in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Last year, Massachusetts passed similar legislation, making it the first state in the country to mandate nondiscrimination policies in school based on gender identity. On Tuesday schools in Multinomah County, Oregon were also required to begin using gender-neutral bathrooms.
I can’t wait for the first “confused” boy that drops a deuce in the girls restroom.
Wasn't there a school built in NYC 4-5 years ago specifically for gays?
Yep, found it. Harvey Milk High School http://www.wnd.com/2003/07/19991/
But, noooo. We have to allow boys into the girls showers - Here, let me help you with that soap. What's Whoopie going to say about those rapes?
The schools have a copy of their BC when they registered for K or 1st grade. There's a blank with F or M filled in countless times on their record. If a student went by Lance last year but by Lacy this year, then something is up.
Sure, but Lance could just say SHe is Lucy now and use the girls bathroom...
What about the vegisexuals?
Who will guarantee the rights of the vegisexuals?
For shame.
How many transgendered pupils does a typical high school have at any one time?
I tried several searches on the internet to find out the percentage of transgendered people in the general population. The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta did a study a few years ago that showed the percentage of homosexuals was about 2-3%. True transgendered would be a fraction of that.
One European study showed 1 in 37,000. Another study cited in the New York times found 1 in 500. Truly, no one know the exact number, but it must be very small.
Therefore, maintaining separate but equal facilities for this tiny, but vocal, minority will probably be very expensive. Can you imagine the cost of building a separate bathroom in a school that may not have a single transgendered student? Is this a realistic solution to a suspect problem?
Liberals love to feel good about themselves without regard to the costs to folks who might not agree with their profigate spending.
Yep what could possibly go wrong with this policy.
