Southwest Virginia circuit court clerks concerned over GOP request for gun permit records

The Republican Party of Virginia's request for the records of concealed handgun permits across the state were met with concern Monday by several Southwest Virginia circuit court clerks, with one seeking an attorney general's opinion.

"The request itself poses several important legal questions," said Jack Kennedy, court clerk for Wise County and Norton.

He and other clerks in the area received a Freedom of Information Act request from Anthony Reedy, the state GOP's executive director, asking for a list of concealed handgun permit carriers in each jurisdiction.

Kennedy outlined his legal questions in a letter sent Monday to state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and asked for an official opinion about how to respond.

Maybe. Or maybe they want to see which prominent Dems have carry permits.

No. They obviously just want it for voter contact outreach information. Still, it’s not right.

Tell ‘em to f*ck off; and, yes, use that precise phrase.

No big conspiracy here. They obviously want a mailing list of mostly Republican voters.

I think it’s just a way to trying to get a list of people to easily galvanize during the VA GOTV efforts.

Probably, but lists like this are dangerous, and I don’t like it one bit.

If a newspaper can get it, anyone should be able to get it.

No one should be able to get such a list. First, government should protect private data better. Far more important though, there should not be a requirement for a permit to exercise a basic human right, and there should be no government data on who owns firearms. We have far too much government, and our highest priority should be to scale back federal, state, and local governments. [Note to the NSA monitor - your metadata will verify that I am a life NRA member browsing the NRA website at this moment, but you should not have any data on my internet activity or my telephone activity, not without a specific search warrant. Generic warrants are unconstitutional.]

I don’t like it either, but given the lawless, unconstrained data-mining operation the left has access to, I can understand the GOP’s sense of urgency in trying to level the tactical playing field. No, I’m not justifying it, but we do have to come up with a counter to the data advantage.

Yeah .. I thought almost the same thing

How many times do we see a Republican or Conservative do something that looks like it's a democrat tactic ?

And further;
the ones concerned are COURT CLERKS !

WHY is the concern of a clerk newsworthy

Galling too is the notion contained in the word 'permit' in the first place. We need to remove the notion that we need permission to possess a weapon.

Here in AZ I traded a set of golf clubs with my neighbor for a nice little .38 Special. Based on our laws here, I now put it in my pocket and carry it.

Try looking that up on your "list".

NO ONE is entitled to that list.

That Republicans have the temerity to ask for it tells us they have no more respect for the law than the left.

Remember people, when the SHTF, the *first* people they are coming after are those on the CCW lists. As far as our rulers are concerned, CCW lists are simply gun owner registration lists, wink wink.

True but the Roanoke Times printed the CCW list once. They will now bash the Republicans for wanting the list.

“No big conspiracy here. They obviously want a mailing list of mostly Republican voters.”

That’s what I think. They are ignorant or stupid to be asking for it after the discussions of the releasing of that information we’ve had and should realize that if they get the list, anyone will be able to get te list.

I swear the GOP = STUPID. No matter what they thought they might get from such records the very act of asking for them was bound to bring negative publicity. STUPID!!!

Perhaps because in the Commonwealth of Virginia the court clerk is the one who processes CCW applications and issues permits? See Code of Virginia 18.2-308D & H for further info
