Strobridge Elementary Principal Charles Hill has a brilliant idea: hes holding a toy gun exchange next Saturday in which students of the Hayward, CA school can turn in a toy gun to receive a book and a raffle ticket to win one of four bicycles.
Really.
Hill believes that children who play with toy guns may not think real guns are dangerous. Playing with toy guns, saying Im going to shoot you, desensitizes them, so as they get older, its easier for them to use a real gun, he claims.
Hill was inspired by a school photographer, Horace Gibson, who was upset about the number of police shootings of young people in Oakland.
At Strobridge Elementary Safety Day, a local policeman will demonstrate bicycle and gun safety, (does he get to use a real gun?), while the Alameda County Fire Department will speak about fire safety. Just to show that local governments can do surveillance too, there will be opportunities for the children to be fingerprinted and photographed, with that information transferred to CDs if it is ever needed for a missing child case.
Hill, defending his take-away program, asserted that police are justifiably afraid when they face armed suspects, and toy guns have been mistaken for real ones.
But Yih-Chau Chang, spokesman for Responsible Citizens of California, said, Having a group of children playing cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians is a normal part of growing up.

words fail.
So I guess the murder rate was 10,000% higher back in the 1950's when EVERY boy was playing Cop's and Robber's or Cowboy's and Indian's with a realistic gun....Right?
I was lucky to have had a Daisy Pump Gun as a kid. And I never came close to shooting my eye out either.
Conditioning and indoctrinating them young for the real thing later.
More children die fro bicycle accidents than gun accidents.
So if a kid brings a toy gun to the school for the program should they be arrested for violating the schools zero tolerance policy on guns?
Only if they chew a pop tart into the shape of a gun.
Send the kid with an issue of Shotgun News.
Should be good for LOTS of raffle tickets.
Fingerprinted, photographed, guns taken away. Welcome to America kids.
Transferred to CD's? Bullsh!t, who do they think we are? Just more government intrusion and tracking of YOUR children.
This is idiotic.
what about young girls who watch TV shows that show professionally promiscuous women? Using Hills line of reasoning means young girls are in danger of becoming whores.
Some devious person in CA should buy some ultra cheap toy guns (China produced $.01 sold at Big Lots) and cover the area with them.
Too many adults can be fooled by toy guns...Can’t have toy guns falling into the wrong hands, right?
I would send my kid to school with a peanut butter sandwich gnawed off into the shape of a gun and try to win a bicycle...
How are this principal’s kids performing on standardized tests?
