For Dennis Ebersole, the fallout from the Boy Scouts of America's decision to change a century of policy and allow openly gay Scouts to participate wasn't long in coming.
"Within 12 hours of the announcement that the membership standards resolution had passed, I was contacted by five other members in my pack leadership committee, questioning whether they were going to continue Scouting," said Mr. Ebersole, a den leader with Cub Scout Pack 282 in South Riding, Va.
The reaction was equally quick for Gary Hiden, an assistant scoutmaster of Troop 268 in New Market, Md., who has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America his whole life. He was a Boy Scout, and his mother served as a den mother and his father as a scoutmaster. Now, both his sons are Scouts. But the family plans to quit the Boy Scouts once the new policy takes effect Jan. 1.
"I'm very sad, because it's a part of me and a part of my family. We have so much invested in Boy Scouting," Mr. Hiden said. "But we don't believe that the new policy is consistent with our beliefs."
Mr. Hiden's troop is chartered by a Lutheran church, and he identifies himself as a Christian. He said his elder son, who is 15, is just shy of becoming an Eagle. "Hopefully, he'll be able to be an Eagle Scout by Jan. 1," he said before the policy comes into force.
The dust is settling two weeks after the Boy Scouts of America's national council adopted the policy accepting openly gay Scouts but retaining a ban on gay adult Scout leaders.

I agree.
“hey queer...... get some firewood”
Boys are not PC out of earshot
The Old Boy Scouts embodied much that was wholesome and good about America. The liberals HAD to destroy it. They have been successful. No relative of ours will remain in the Scouts. No one of the succeeding generation will ever join. Leadership matters. When push came to shove, the Scouts’ national leadership was infected by base cowardice. An appalling vista.
It was for Life rank. Yes, they are allowed to ask about how the scout lives out being reverent. They are allowed to ask about how the scout fulfills his “duty to God.” They are not allowed to ask if God created gays.
The BSA leadership remands me of the GOP leadership -spineless...
You are still promoting it huh? Different tact? LOL!!!!
My first thought exactly.
The money changers in charge of the Boy Scouts are the ones who showed disloyalty.
Tell you what. I'll consider supporting the Scouts when and if the Nation Council or even the local Utah Council revokes the commission of the Scout unit and membership of offenders that marched in the Salt Lake "gay pride" parade last week in defiance of an order.
But I won't hold my breath.
Let’s be clear. No twisted words toreinforce your bias.
I’m promoting Scouting, BSA. I will continue to do so.
One thing you learn from years and years on Free Republic. Conservatives cut and run at the least possible threat to their beliefs
I think you confuse politics with parenting. Leftists sacrifice children for their causes -especially other peoples children. Conservatives do not. The noble cause that you pursue (HOPING to influence the BSA from within) does not justify the evil means (placing children in harms way) This is an ADULT battle with EVIL.
If you are not conservative, Bert, then why do you post here? Just to stir up trouble?
Who are you to judge newbie?
crawl back under your rock
You are 71 years old and this is your maturity level? Maybe you should go back to bee keeping.
This viewpoint has been discussed in detail on FR. The short answer is "no". And here is why ...
1. O'Sullivan's First Law: All organizations that are not actually right-wing will over time become left-wing.
2. Cultural Marxism, which came out of the "Frankfurt School" has firmly taken root in the U.S. - public schools, media, philanthropic foundations, Hollywood, government, and some Christian denominations.
3. The LDS, Methodist, and Roman Catholic churches, which are the 3 largest denominations in chartering scout units, all have signalled that they will continue supporting BSA.
4. The largest homosexual rights group, The Human Rights Campaign, was founded in 1980. It started its Corporate Equality Index in 2000. Large corporations are pushed into embracing the qualifications set forth for a 100% score by their Human Resources Departements.
5. There are 3 officers on the BSA's National Executive Committee who are also CEOs of Fortune 500 corporations ...
a. Randall Stephenson, currently a BSA VP and expected to be elected the next BSA President in 2014. He is the CEO of AT&T. AT&T's HQ is in Dallas, TX. BSA's HQ is in Irving, TX, close-by. On 8/18/2008 AT&T donated U.S.$3 million to kick off nationwide support for the BSA's 100th Anniversary Celebration in 2010. AT&T donated the infra-structure for wireless communications at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree at Ft. A.P. Hill, VA. Over 5/30-6/02/2012 at the annual National Council business meeting, it was announced that AT&T had agreed to light up The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in WV with wireless telecommunications capability in time for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree. AT&T has scored 100% on the HRC's CQI over the last 6 years.
b. James Turley, currently the BSA International Commissioner, is CEO of Ernst & Young. Chuck Norris wrote a column on 6/24/2012 exposing many troublesome connections bewteen Turley and the Obama administration. E&Y has scored 100% on the HRC's CQI over the last 6 years.
c. Rex Tillerson, currently the BSA Past President, is CEO of Exxon-Mobil. E-M's HQ is also in Irving, TX. He aggressively petitioned the leadership of the Southern Baptist Commission to not oppose the new membership standard.
6. It has been reported that an unidentified, former, member of the BSA National Executive Board has stated that the BSA's new crown jewel, The Summit Reserve, in WV is deeply in debt. The 18th National Scout Jamboree will be hled there over 7/15-24/2013. At least 50,000 are expected in attendance.
For someone who claims to be fighting for Scouting, yours is one of the most un-Scout like behaviors I have yet witnessed on FR.
Those leaving are doing so for their own reasons, just as I am. The BSA is corrupted from the top down. National is corrupted and that rot has worked its way down to Councils all across the country.
They have lost the vision, the purpose and aims of Scouting in their quest for acceptance and $$. They welcomed these corporate scum into their midst and this is the result.
I no longer have faith or trust in the “leadership” at National or in my Council. Thus, I will not either explicitly or tacitly endorse their behavior or idealogy by my continued participation.
For you to engage in personal attacks against those who have been hurt by this deceitful betrayal says much. Many have years, decades even of sacrifice for the BSA.
But the BSA elected to commit suicide by this decision and in doing so, betrayed those who held to the ideals of Scouting. That the Oath and Law weren’t mere words to be memorized and recited to pass a BoR.
They lied to us when they came out with that farce of a video claiming they “listened” to the rank and file. The Councils then got their marching orders, stack the delegations with those amenable to the change. Attempting to give an air of legitimacy to the “vote”. And then “voted” for the change.
How do you reconcile 60%+ in the survey saying leave things alone with the 60%+ who “voted” to change the policy if we were supposedly “listened to”?
Pure propaganda and yet, here you are, berating, mocking, vilifying those who reject National’s betrayal.
After 20+ years, I am resigning all of my affiliations with Scouting next summer. Scoutmaster, Asst. OA Lodge Advisor, District Cmte Member at large, Eagle BoR member and Merit Badge Counselor. Not counting the $$ I have donated or helped BSA “earn” with fundraising and participation in events.
And it’s next summer only at the request of certain parents who are trying to get their kids to Eagle as soon as possible, otherwise, it would have been the day of the decision.
It’s not about the queers, there have been queers in Scouting for many years.
It’s about an organization that has lost its way. Lost its moral compass and in turn, its validity, usefulness and purpose.
Homo or Hetero sexuality, at least the practice or execution pertaining to the behaviors thereof have NEVER had any place in the Scouting movement. No sexual behavior is tolerated, no one-on-one contact, even talking outside of the clear view and hearing of others is permitted. This has been the policy for a long time. There are clear rules and they are enforced.
It is not a sin, nor is it offensive to God in any way to be shouldered with same sex attraction. It is the behaviors, the acting out, the succumbing to the temptation this causes that is the sinful, disordered problem. Same sex attraction is a heavy cross to bear, especially in a culture where everything is dripping with sexual innuendo and soft core pornography is portrayed as mainstream.
The Church teaches to love the sinner while hating the sin. It could well be that those with same sex attraction have been commissioned by God Himself for a higher purpose than procreation. It could be that the single life for these individuals is meant for complex research, free from the distraction of the domestic family life. It could be that these people are meant for much much more. Nobody wants to hear about this. Nobody wants to think about this. Yet hardly anybody knows precisely what God’s will is for their lives either. The sexually (if you can call it that) active homosexuals have too much Pride (Hubris) to consider another alternative except to act out on their attraction. In the end, they use others for pleasure, twisting what should rightfully be filial love, the love that one has for a brother or sister in Christ or a best friend into something perverted and disordered. They care only about themselves and their gratification, how they can use another to get what they want.
So long as the behaviors of same sex attraction can be kept out of the BSA the organization may continue to thrive. There are plenty of people with same sex attraction that do not practice the perverted resulting behaviors. They do not consider themselves lapdog media or hollywood fashioned homosexuals. As long as these folks, along with vigilant heterosexuals volunteer in Scouting, the program has a chance. This is one way that I can see the continued use of Morally Straight to be used in the Oath, and Reverent in the Law.
The fact is that boys need Scouting. It may be that those with same sex attraction need the program more than anyone.
Sorry for the long post.
My $0.02
drivel
Chances are that younger boys will be molested by teen homos. The activities are ideal for chicken hawks. I don’t support child molestation.
Before the scouts took up banning homos, they used to just ignore the whole topic and then hide the molested kids for fear of wrecking their organization. What will they now? Ignore “consensual” sex on outings and at camps?
Prove otherwise.
Yes, church camps
