A 29-year-old former CIA worker and current defense contractor employee has come forward as the source of the National Security Agency leaks to The Guardian newspaper:
The individual responsible for one of the most significant leaks in US political history is Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of the defence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. Snowden has been working at the National Security Agency for the last four years as an employee of various outside contractors, including Booz Allen and Dell.
The Guardian, after several days of interviews, is revealing his identity at his request. From the moment he decided to disclose numerous top-secret documents to the public, he was determined not to opt for the protection of anonymity. I have no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong, he said.
Snowden will go down in history as one of Americas most consequential whistleblowers, alongside Daniel Ellsberg and Bradley Manning. He is responsible for handing over material from one of the worlds most secretive organisations the NSA.
In a note accompanying the first set of documents he provided, he wrote: I understand that I will be made to suffer for my actions, but I will be satisfied if the federation of secret law, unequal pardon and irresistible executive powers that rule the world that I love are revealed even for an instant.

You're joking, right? Please tell me you're joking about this. You are talking about the United States government, right?
Do you know how telephone systems work?
I can just imagine what the rest of the world thinks-
The Diaper-heads MUST BE thinking this is their golden opportunity, because we have a Muslim infiltrator in charge...
And the rest of the countries must be freaked out - the most powerful country on the planet is being run by idiots.
I see at least someone understands.
China calls the shots in Hong Kong. They would rename one of their major port cities after this guy and give him the keys to find out everything he knows about NSA operations.
Believe whatever you want ~ but this one is way up there. Although it’s probably impossible in the long run to hide the fact you’ve tapped every channel of communication in the world, this guy didn’t need to be the messenger. Now he must pay the price.
That's what they say now, to justify storing every iota of information on every form of communication and exchange of monies of every person, everywhere, who crosses the paths of their enormous spy cababilities, including citizens of other nations. Within that data load is the potential to persecute any American at any time in the future over fine points of law not even invented yet; because the storage facilities they are building intend to save every scrap of info about every person who uses any form of electronic communication whatsoever in perpetuity. You buy an hour with a hooker in 2013; in 2053 you are a Senator, and the system is hacked by a political opponent who, if he or she cannot unseat you outright, at least can sow disgrace into your 45-year-long marriage and humiliate your grandchildren.
The law of unintended consequences applies here. Birth control was sold to the public as an aid for married couples to space their children out and not have too many mouths to feed. But it led inexorably to what we now have: an epidemic of fatherless children, children of divorce, sexually and emotionally abused children, a holocaust of abortions, the destruction of a legally-supported culture of marriage and the natural family, and even the rise of the gay rights agenda, enabled by the foregoing destruction. Likewise with Social Security, Federal Income Tax, and a host of other programs "helped" by Big Government and the Supreme Court. They start out with laudable goals -- or so the public is led to believe. They end up costing everyone more money every year and entrapping more and more people in a web of deceit and inescapable annulment of their Constitutional rights and even fundamental human rights in a fog of regulation and government sleight of hand.
I fail to believe a 29yr old with 4 years experience has been given the keys to the kingdom.
Or knows the same information given to the senators in their briefings.
Look at all the damage done to national security during the Clinton administration. He didn’t do that by himself. And it sure wasn’t peons selling Loral’s info to the chicoms.
God, preserve me, when I am old, from taking sarcasm seriously and living in the past and making a fool of myself and revealing it online (with reference to the post numbered below).
Proving a negative is impossible, and you well know that. The burden is on you to prove the positive assertion.
And you know this -- how?
Well and Manning was a hero.
I pray for the guy’s safety - he has real balls, defending the oath to the constitution to defend our rights from “enemies domestic.” The oath Obama has spit on. The oath our Senators laugh at.
Between the tyranny of the IRS - the fully communist/socialist bureaucratic monster the government has become - and the many political usurpations of our rights - at least one man has said, ‘no more.’
Anyone with the courage to go against these monsters has my respect!
We all can talk a big game about being defiant (from the safety of our computers), but this man had the courage to do something - and he may actually die for it - if they can get ahold of him.
Does anyone else out there have that real courage, or are they on the couch watching ‘dancing with the stars.’ I hope to get my courage back from this man’s example.
Except, the most unpardonable of sins, made ObOzO look bad.
g’day, Albion
Snowden sounds like one of his generation who was attracted to Ron Paul, liking neither Bush nor Obama nor Romney, etc. Sounds more like Ellsberg than Manning. Whether in the end he did a good think remain to be seen. It’s not as if we didn’t suspect what was going on, but this just confirms it.
How much you wanna bet he is NOT in Hong Kong? That part, I imagine, is purely diversionary or they’d have nabbed him in a NY minute. TMI
He’s a “traitor” but Bradley Manning is a patriot. Only in LibWorld.
They’ll say that it’s “not optimal.”
I wonder if the NSA used PRISM to listen in on Justice John Roberts to get information to compell Roberts decision on the Affordable Health Care. It was well within the reach of anyone who might control PRISMS. There is no end to the blackmail which would be possible....get rich obtaining insider information, tap judges, lawyers, doctors, legislators....You all heard it asked of Holder....can he guarantee legislators are not being surveilled. Where does it end if we have anyone less than an Angel running the government. This intrusiveness is more dangerous than A-bombs. Now, we have Obama...Ask yourself...Is there ANYTHING he says or does which you believe is good for the country. Will he do anything which is not in his interests? I think not. Congress, more than ever, needs to do its oversight job.
That's raw copy from Hassan himself! It is inconceivable that the Post with a dozen reporters working the story out there didn't know about that.
The fact you didn't know that means what?
