The Internet is a surveillance state
CNN ^ | March 16, 2013 | Bruce Schneier

CNN) -- I'm going to start with three data points. One: Some of the Chinese military hackers who were implicated in a broad set of attacks against the U.S. government and corporations were identified because they accessed Facebook from the same network infrastructure they used to carry out their attacks. Two: Hector Monsegur, one of the leaders of the LulzSac hacker movement, was identified and arrested last year by the FBI. Although he practiced good computer security and used an anonymous relay service to protect his identity, he slipped up.

And three: Paula Broadwell, who had an affair with CIA director David Petraeus, similarly took extensive precautions to hide her identity. She never logged in to her anonymous e-mail service from her home network. Instead, she used hotel and other public networks when she e-mailed him. The FBI correlated hotel registration data from several different hotels -- and hers was the common name. The Internet is a surveillance state. Whether we admit it to ourselves or not, and whether we like it or not, we're being tracked all the time. Google tracks us, both on its pages and on other pages it has access to.

They say metadata as tho that in and of itself is not a bad thing. But far as I’m concerned, the govt knowing “where” i am at a given moment is scary. Plus it’s none of their g-d business.

0bama and the Globalists have to seize the Net and all communications to cut off opposition and reports of it. Along with stifling liberty and Truth.

The time line, is the fall of the Soviet Union, many many folks were faced with job losses, Russian language was a job killer....and so with time on their hands certain folks, decided to use their skills on an economical front....and so here we are today.....I can almost guarantee that global business will have encryption equal to better than the military....

Encryption has been useless for 10 years or longer.

Dog that didn’t bark.

When was the last time you saw or heard a fed LEO get on tv and kvetch about the civilians having access to encryption?

Trust encryption at your peril.

We have given our kids and now our freedoms to protect one city.

Still, it keeps track of quite a bit, but like I said, I have no worries on this PC.

No worries at all.

Click here. (don't worry, it's just a link to GOOGLE)

So... the XBOX can track you, but only if you are in the room with the XBOX and within the 'range' of the 'eye'. Easy solution, move out of the room.

Hold on a second.

You can encrypt your 'traffic', but the Feds have required all computing devices with communication ability to have a 'backdoor'. No encryption, No Passwords needed.

They can access your computer, or a server anytime they want.

Yes they can. I do draw Social Security, but under another name.
I am not intentionally hiding from anyone, but living offshore
tends to shield one from government intrusion, not to mention
an incredibly lower cost of living.

“...living offshore tends to shield one from government intrusion...”

Do you mean to imply there are no governments offshore?

I think you know that meant US government intrusion.
As for the foreign governments that I have lived under,
they have not tried to dictate how I live.

Of course they can. I was an expat when I went on Social Security, which has always been direct deposited into a foreign bank.
I am implying that I now live much freer and cheaper then if I were back in the states.
