Chinese meat company Shuanghui Internationals plans to buy U.S.-based pork producer Smithfield Foods Inc. has some lawmakers worried the deal could create food safety issues for U.S. consumers. Mostly silent after the deal was announced a week ago during a Congressional recess, lawmakers are taking a closer look.
Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow, Democrat of Michigan, said on Wednesday that federal agencies considering the merger must take Chinas and Shuanghuis troubling track record on food safety into account.
That concern stems from recent food safety issues at Shuanghui and in China. The company was forced to recall its Shineway brand meat products from stores two years ago amid fears that some of it contained a banned feed additive called clenbuterolan incident referred to by Stabenow.

You know...that "organic" stuff that will make you live forever.
Funny they talk food safety but never strategical upsets like Clinton giving them the Panama canal and Bahamian harbors, or the platinum mines used for nuclear air filtration.
Or the Klintoon-Loral telemetry guidance-for-cash deal.
I don’t mind selling to China but I sure don’t want to buy food from them.
Most people don’t know that they use manure on organic...and if it’s not treated properly...YOU DIE!!
I buy local PA - Kunzler, Dietz & Watson, local butchers etc - and after the dog/catfood deaths and numerous other horror stories about the ChiComms, I’ll leave Smithfield product in the market, untouched.
YEAH |
I sent them a scathing e-mail last week telling them exactly that.
The label apparently is unclear.
Packaged in the US from foreign sources. Some of the fruit came from Argentina and some from Turkey.
.......Townsend Farms said it suspects pomegranate seeds processed in Turkey were contaminated, which may be linked to yet another outbreak outside the U.S......

IMO that is something the Gov. should mandate. Origin of ingredients.
Couple yrs. ago it was revealed most wheat gluten came from China and Kraft may have been using it.
I shot off an e=mail to Kraft inquiring .
The return e-mail simply stated that every ingredient is tested for quality. They didn't deny the allegation.
People near a Smithfield plant can look forward to pork floating downstream in the same river where they go fishing. One stop shopping for the prepper.
Cant wait for my breakfest sausage to bark or meow.....!
Selling out to the Chinese says a lot about Smithfield. As if it wasn’t enough they’ve had muliple raids for hiring illegals then they sell out to China. Paula Deen is their spokesperson and has been through the raids. She also lied about having all the candidate wives on her show when she only has had Moo during both campaigns. I used to like her but she’s shown her colors and lack of values far too many times to ignore.
