Five dead in Santa Monica shooting rampage
Los Angeles Times ^ | June 7, 2013 | By Andrew Blankstein, Robert Faturechi and Joel Rubin

A heavily armed gunman killed four people Friday in a rampage through the streets of Santa Monica that ended when police fatally shot him at a college library where students had been studying for exams.

By Friday evening, investigators were still working to piece together the confusing string of incidents that unfolded about noon along Pico Boulevard and on the campus of Santa Monica College.

Authorities had not yet released the name of the gunman or the victims and declined to discuss what may have spurred the rampage. For hours the campus remained on lockdown as police methodically searched buildings for additional victims and possible other suspects. At a press conference held after nightfall, a Santa Monica police official said investigators believed the gunman had acted alone. The official also corrected an earlier police report that six victims were killed and said that a "person of interest" taken into custody had been cleared of any involvement.

The first signs of trouble came about 11:50 a.m., when gunshots rang out at Kansas and Yorkshire avenues, a quiet neighborhood nestled along the Santa Monica Freeway.

Firefighters would later find the bodies of two men inside the house. Police sources, who requested anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, said the men were Samir Zawahri, 55, the owner of the house, and one of his adult sons. A second son is suspected of being the shooter, the sources said. . .

Funny you should post the Verizon reference.

I was hearing yesterday on the news that the NSA, government, administration-whoever said “we have already used this PRISM thingy to stop a very high priority dangerous terror plot...blah blah blah....”

Yeah, I’ll believe that. I think these guys couldn’t find their own butt with both hands AND a flashlight.

Given the name, I would caution people not to jump to conclusions. The first name “Samir” is used by eastern Christians from the Middle East. I have met Christians (not new converts from Islam, but from long standing Christian families) with the name Samir. I don’t know whether that name is also used by people of other religions (i.e. Zoroastrianism, Islam, etc.).

We all ought to be aware that in the last few decades thousands of eastern Christians have left the Middle East and sought asylum elsewhere because of persecution.

Apparently, they used FBI to shoot that moslem in the back of the head during “questioning” in FLA two weeks ago.

Did I read correctly that the “suspect” killed his own father and brother! Maybe he was radicalized and the father /brother were trying to stop him? Just a thought.

My comment was not intended to suggest that Zoroastrians were peaceable or otherwise, but rather to suggest that it is very possible that someone with the name Samir comes from a Christian background. And note that I say, “Christian background.” Not all those who call themselves Christian truly are Christian, and not all who profess to be Christian are peaceable.

Witness the conflict between “Catholic” and “Protestant” in Northern Ireland. Many there who identify themselves as Catholic or Protestant truly are peaceable, but the past bloodshed suggests that some who claim those identities have nothing to do with true Biblical Christianity.

Nice but they probably were Verizon customers however, under the Obama Administration I’m sure the PRISM S/W has a filter to eliminate any Muslim names and any calls to Muslim countries.

Well, well, well. Nanny bloomers, difi, bobie boxcar, are you there? Did king hussein have anyone that might have been his son, if he had one, there? This ought to get you and the gabby and mark kelley-giffords travelin’ road show all giddy with another of the “too many times” statistical anamolies crap. No more of those deadly 10 round magazines. One round mags in kali after this. Intergalactic background checks for everyone over the age of 5. Yeah. We’ll add some more laws that won’t do a damn thing to prevent something like this from happening. Guns on campus? Not for the law abiding. Criminals? CRI-MI-NALS! Look it up some time.

There are a lot of Coptic Christians from Egypt in Southern California--and soon there will be a lot more.
