Democrat Defends IRS Targeting of Traditional Marriage Group

Calling the tax-exempt status of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) a “charade,” Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) said it should not qualify for 501(c)(4) status with the Internal Revenue Service, because it is not a social welfare group but political in nature.

“It’s everybody’s right to participate in politics, and well you should,” Blumenauer said on Tuesday at the House Ways and Means Committee hearing into allegations that the IRS targeted conservative organizations, including NOM. “But I think having organizations parading as being social welfare organizations and then being involved in political combat harkens back to why the [IRS 501(c)(4)] statute—a hundred years ago—said that they were prohibited, and I wholeheartedly agree.” …

But John Eastman, a law professor at Chapman University School of Law and chairman of the board for NOM and who was on the panel of witnesses at the hearing, did not let Blumenauer’s remarks go unanswered. … “Representative Blumenauer, it’s your kind of statement that have empowered IRS agents to make determinations about which organizations qualify for the public good and which do not. The notion that defending traditional marriage doesn’t qualify as a defense of the public good is beyond preposterous.”

Well, I know contributions to NOM are not tax deductible. I guess that’s because it goes against the “geh.”

This guy would probably agree with giving NAMBLA tax exempt status though.

if he wants to end this tax provision, that’s ok with me...
but it is NOT ok to let the administration mis-use it for the administration’s partisan political purposes.. by granting the favorable tax treatment to its political friends and denying the favorable treatment to its political opponents

it is this corruption of our tax laws that needs fixing for sure!

(ps: a simplified revenue scheme would remove most, if not all, of the opportunities for corruption by top level politicians and officials ....let’s at least remove the temptation!)

...organizations parading as being social welfare organizations and then being involved in political combat...

And why would Planned Parenthood not be considered such a group, Mr. Blumenauer? Because it's primarily a leftist organization? Hmmmmmm? Is your statement 1984 doublespeak meant to say that only leftist ideas and groups deserve government help and protection?

Labor unions are 501(c)’s. If the political behavior of any tax exempt organization is investigated it should be AFL-CIO and SEIU.

He misses the point. Groups on the left that were more political than educational had no problem getting their tax exempt status from the IRS.

This isn’t about whether CITIZENS UNITED was right or wrong, it’s about using the same standard for both liberals and conservatives.

I think it has something to do with Equal Protection and Due Process...the guy should read the 14th Amendment.

I hope finally that Americans will begin to realize that their Country is beginning to be communists run dictatorship. There are millions of small minded Americans that will never get it but maybe the rest might.

It is socially desirable to have children raised in a traditional two parent household with mother and father present.

Now, tell me grand master of “socially Acceptable”, what’s wrong with that?

over half of this country has no clue about any of this corruption.

For the last two weeks I have been flicking through channels and I have not seen once CNN mention the IRS, DOJ, DOE, HHS, it’s about Zimmermann, a storm, Jackson trying to do her self in and other crap.

MSNBC only mentions it when they are trying to give their sheep and cult talking points and trust me I heard those talking points off a dope the other day at a gas station when I questioned her after seeing her obama sticker.

Evening news is not mentioning it now and local papers have not from what I have seen.

The media are in full cover up mode again even though they were targeted but in their world dog eats dog and it was not them but just FOX and the AP, just wait till it hits CNN,

Rep. Earl Blumenauer of the bicycle caucus who claims he wants transparency in government...

******

Mr. Blumenauer, a passionate advocate of cycling as a remedy for everything from climate change to obesity, represents most of Portland in Congress, where he is the founder and proprietor of the 180 (plus or minus)-member Congressional Bicycle Caucus. Long regarded in some quarters as quixotic, the caucus has come into its own as hard times, climate concerns, gyrating gas prices and worries about fitness turn people away from their cars and toward their bikes.

“We have been flogging this bicycle thing for 20 years,” said Mr. Blumenauer, a Democrat. “All of a sudden it’s hot.”

But Mr. Blumenauer’s goals are larger than putting Americans on two wheels. He seeks to create what he calls a more sustainable society, including wiser use of energy, farming that improves the land rather than degrades it, an end to taxpayer subsidies for unwise development — and a transportation infrastructure that looks beyond the car.

A Portland native, Mr. Blumenauer, 60, has spent his adult life in elective office.

In addition to bicycles, Mr. Blumenauer is particularly interested in public broadcasting and the plight of pollinators like honeybees. He is a founder of a “livable communities task force” whose goal, he said, is to educate members of Congress and their staffs on the benefits of transportation alternatives, open space, sustainability, vibrant downtowns, affordable housing and transparency in government.

the left will fight a little about fiscal poicy but go after their social issues like marriage they fight till the death.

Our side has too many cowards or trolls supporting their communist agenda and even come on here saying we should nto mention social issues or it is not important.

Well as one who grew up in foster homes and wanted a mother and a father then it is important.

No kid wants homosexuals, sissy guys to be fathers or a girl being told off two guys how she feels during puberty etc

Oh, then when there’s a republican in charge, it will be perfectly fine for them to target the LGBT?

Your post shows that the news media completely controls this country , the USA. the media has absolute power. I mean there are a milion scandals this Criminal Obama has perpetrated and most people haven't heard of any of them or the few that can recall something about a scandal think it is Bush's or Republicans’ fault. And they think that Obama is trying to fix the problems but that Republicans are stopping his reforms. the media PUT all this in their heads. all of it. Imagine if an entity had the power to put the info into 10% of the electorate.even that could swing an election but it's much higher . at least 60% have no clue as to the scandals. The media controls most of the info 80% of the people get.only about 20$ maybe see the other side but they are affected by the media matrix too., a few have heard something about the scandals but think they are some problems Bush caused and that its Republicans’ fault *Republicans won't work with the President to fix the problems”. Much more people know about kim kardashian, sports than they know about the scandals.
