American tourist gang-raped in northern India

SHIMLA, India - An American tourist was gang-raped by a group of men in a hill resort in northern India, police said on Tuesday, in the latest of a series of attacks that have thrown the spotlight on women’s safety in the world’s largest democracy.

The woman was picked up by three men in a truck on Monday night while hitch-hiking back to her guest house in the town of Manali in Himachal Pradesh state, police said. She had been visiting friends and had been unable to find a taxi home.

Three men were briefly detained and then released in connection with the attack, Himachal Pradesh police chief B. Kamal Kumar told Reuters, clarifying an earlier statement which appeared to say the men had been arrested.

“Sorry, I think it was misquoted. I think they were detained for questioning, they were not arrested,” Kumar told Reuters.

The woman told police her attackers took her to an isolated area and raped her. She was taken to a local hospital for preliminary tests before being taken back to her guest house, said a local police inspector, who declined to be identified.

“We are in contact with authorities but due to issues of privacy we have no further comment,” Peter Vrooman, spokesman for the U.S. embassy in New Delhi, said in an e-mail.

Instead of dropping the woman at her hotel, the men drove in a different direction for about 16 or 17 km (10.5 miles), then overpowered and raped her, the inspector said, adding that the hospital test had confirmed the sexual assault.

“Her condition is stable and she is accompanied by two women constables. All medical help has been given, and the doctors have been taking care of her,” the inspector said. “We have told her we are like family and are available for any help.”

In March, a Swiss tourist was gang-raped while on a camping trip in a forest in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. In the same month, a British woman jumped out of her hotel balcony in Uttar Pradesh state to escape a feared sexual assault.

Sex crimes are common in India. The National Crime Records Bureau says more than 24,200 rapes were reported across the country in 2011 — about one every 20 minutes.

“Women should observe stringent security precautions, including avoiding use of public transport after dark without the company of known and trustworthy companions,” according to a U.S. State Department travel advisory for India.

Police are investigating the alleged rape of a 21-year-old Irish woman working as a volunteer with a non-governmental organization in West Bengal at the weekend.

The gang rape of a 23-year-old Indian woman on a bus on Dec. 16 in New Delhi brought thousands of people onto the streets in protest, demanding better policing to prevent sex crimes. The trainee physiotherapist later died from her injuries.

Excerpt:

And yet India only ranks third for the number of rapes reported each year. What country ranks first?  The United States. In India, a country of over 1.2 billion people, 24,206 rapes were reported in 2011.  The same year in the United States, a nation of 300 million, 83,425 rapes were reported. In the United States, every 6.2 minutes a woman is raped.

“Only an extremist Free Trader Globalist believes the crap spewed about the “highly educated workforce”. “

Have you been to India?

I seriously doubt if you could pass the Form 6 (12th grade) graduation exam from an Indian technical high school.

I sent some time in India, evaluating 6 Indian high tech companies for a join project with my former US company. I doubt if I was sufficiently qualified to have been hired by the best two of those companies. Outstanding companies, management and workers.

India is a large country with a huge population. Generalizations work there about as well as they do in the US. Is “Seminole County” comparable to downtown Detroit, South Central LA or Chicago’s Southside? What about Atlanta’s Tuxedo Dr, The Hamptons or Newport RI?

A woman hitchhiking at night, almost anywhere in the world, is asking for trouble. Rape & sexual assault are reprehensible, but the female global traveler seems oblivious of the dangers to which she exposes herself.

Not the victims fault, but how stupid does one have to be to even visit a savage country unarmed? Including any savage infested urban areas in America.

The victim is likely a liberal with a naive belief in the superiority of the ancient Indian culture; ergo, safe to hitchhike while it's dangerous in the USA. But, of course, she was a victim.

And even more outrageous is the fact that there are about 8 times as many rapes in the U.S. in a year...

Is it possible that many more rapes go unreported in India?

So it’s the woman’s fault?

I agree it was stupidly incautious of her to get into the situation, but she was not ‘responsible’.

Where did I say it was her fault or that she was responsible?

Women aren’t responsible nor at fault for anything.

“”And even more outrageous is the fact that there are about 8 times as many rapes in the U.S. in a year...””

“Is it possible that many more rapes go unreported in India?”

Certainly it is — for any country, India and the U.S. included. Both have corrupt agencies. And then there’s the mainstream news media, also corrupt the world over.

I think it’s likely that more rapes go unreported in India than the US. Just a guess.

The Muslim population is increasing there so the number of unreported rapes may also be increasing. A social worker I know has told me that it is the same story in NY (state) and Michigan.

I agree that where Muslims are rapes increase, so it follows that the number unreported would increase.

She was a victim of misinformation about the world, before she was a victim of this.

Oh, yes. I did say that.

My bad.

I certainly know, girls are not responsible for anything.

Clearly, you are in the ‘women are responsible for rape’ camp.

Yes, hitchhiking in India and getting in the truck with three men is certainly something my father would have advised his daughters to do.

As I pointed out earlier—that was stupid of her to do.
