American tourist gang-raped in northern India

SHIMLA, India - An American tourist was gang-raped by a group of men in a hill resort in northern India, police said on Tuesday, in the latest of a series of attacks that have thrown the spotlight on women’s safety in the world’s largest democracy.

The woman was picked up by three men in a truck on Monday night while hitch-hiking back to her guest house in the town of Manali in Himachal Pradesh state, police said. She had been visiting friends and had been unable to find a taxi home.

Three men were briefly detained and then released in connection with the attack, Himachal Pradesh police chief B. Kamal Kumar told Reuters, clarifying an earlier statement which appeared to say the men had been arrested.

“Sorry, I think it was misquoted. I think they were detained for questioning, they were not arrested,” Kumar told Reuters.

The woman told police her attackers took her to an isolated area and raped her. She was taken to a local hospital for preliminary tests before being taken back to her guest house, said a local police inspector, who declined to be identified.

“We are in contact with authorities but due to issues of privacy we have no further comment,” Peter Vrooman, spokesman for the U.S. embassy in New Delhi, said in an e-mail.

Instead of dropping the woman at her hotel, the men drove in a different direction for about 16 or 17 km (10.5 miles), then overpowered and raped her, the inspector said, adding that the hospital test had confirmed the sexual assault.

“Her condition is stable and she is accompanied by two women constables. All medical help has been given, and the doctors have been taking care of her,” the inspector said. “We have told her we are like family and are available for any help.”

In March, a Swiss tourist was gang-raped while on a camping trip in a forest in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. In the same month, a British woman jumped out of her hotel balcony in Uttar Pradesh state to escape a feared sexual assault.

Sex crimes are common in India. The National Crime Records Bureau says more than 24,200 rapes were reported across the country in 2011 — about one every 20 minutes.

“Women should observe stringent security precautions, including avoiding use of public transport after dark without the company of known and trustworthy companions,” according to a U.S. State Department travel advisory for India.

Police are investigating the alleged rape of a 21-year-old Irish woman working as a volunteer with a non-governmental organization in West Bengal at the weekend.

The gang rape of a 23-year-old Indian woman on a bus on Dec. 16 in New Delhi brought thousands of people onto the streets in protest, demanding better policing to prevent sex crimes. The trainee physiotherapist later died from her injuries.

Not really;

One has to know the rate of this vs the affected population.
There have been some notorious cases widely reported recently but this doesn’t mean that India is particularly dangerous, even for a third world country.

Thats a HUGE country. India is like 3 USA’s in population.

It is a cool idea with some possible consequences. If you don’t get typhoid or some other nasty disease, you might get assaulted. It is a cold cruel world out there. Especially for women.

“Without meaning to diminish the seriousness of these crimes...”

Trying to differentiate between rapes and sexual assaults in a discussion does appear to be an attempt to diminish the seriousness of these crimes. Both crimes are very serious in nature.

India is still a Third World Craphole. Only an extremist Free Trader Globalist believes the crap spewed about the “highly educated workforce”. But...hey...lets ship them all our American jobs...so they stop raping our women

I’ve always wanted to visit India. It’s a fascinating culture. And the cuisine! I always thought the “hill stations” were bastions of British civility. So I was surprised to read about this. I hope I didn’t offend you with my remarks.

Ya. I guess there are parts of the US that are dangerous.

Just that MOST of India is that way.

Yes - I’ve wanted to go there my entire life. The fact that the woman didn’t have a taxi waiting for her and that she hitchhiked (which I wouldn’t do in the heartland of America!) is very strange.

This is so tragic. But why would anyone do tourism in a Third World Hellhole like India? Sure the TAJ MAHAL is beautiful. But there are wonderful films and picture books that show the grandeur of this monument. Without the horrendous smells and amoebic dysentery. And yes, I have been there. For work. Just once and never again.

You sound very Hemingwayesque! He rode the rails and went on hunting trips always carrying knives against men he called “wolves.” Me, I stay at home and read about it.

The original caption from LIFE magazine reads:

At 60 and still full of the Old Nick, Papa Hemingway booted a beer can high in the air along a Idaho road. This was, he said, “the best picture I ever had taken.”

“...so they stop raping our women”

How many do you own in your harem? No women should be raped anywhere.

You have completely misunderstood, misinterpreted, or deliberately misconstrued my point.

You started by making a comparison between the statistics for (reported) rape in India, with the statistics for (reported) rape and sexual assault in the U.S.A. I simply pointed out that your comparison is misleading or meaningless. If you want to make any comparisons between any data sets; you first have to start with a uniform definition of terms. That rule is particularly important for comparing any international statistics (crime, or otherwise).

I also mentioned reporting rates. It's well known that rape is grossly under-reported in India, as compared to the U.S.

...and there’s your answer!! If it *was* Hindu’s (or anybody not Muslim) it would’ve been mentioned. The omission speaks volumes.

Ya. Very foolish. Maybe she was caught up in the romanticism of the trip and forgot that it can be dangerous.

I feel for the Indians because they have to deal with Muslim terrorists. More so than here in the States because they are right next to Pakistan.

Its not clear that their religion would have been reported either way. The Indian news does not tend to do so.
The recent high profile cases (which got lots of people protesting, which this won’t) were perpetrated by Hindus, IIRC, based on the reported names.

The Indian press does not operate according to the PC filters of the Western press. It has its own versions of PC, but this is specific to them.

I blame the British and their heartlessly cruel policies of colonialism ...or something. I'm having an increasingly hard time trying to guess what BS liberals are going to spout.

Will liberals be outraged and decry this behavior because the criminals don't have sufficient melanin, or because they aren't muslim? On the other hand maybe they think it's the victims fault for being in the country, or not wearing a burka, or simply for being female. I eagerly await the moonbats stupidity on this matter.

True, rape is probably much under-reported in India, particularly in the case of that which happens within families, clans and villages. What they actually report seems absurdly low. But thats the case of reporting in most parts of the world.

On the other hand, its still also true that there is no data to compare these rates either way. And there is also the problem of population size. There is no such reliable report that I know of to use for comparison.

The US could easily have a higher rate of rape than India. There is no way to tell.

The moonbats can ignore this entirely.
These cases are a special embarassment to India as it wants more tourists, but I don’t think it warrants any special attention from us. Bad things happen anywhere. Its not clear that there is any special problem with India in this regard.

There are a great many problems comparing crime data between any two jurisdictions — international comparisons being the most problematic.

The “International Association of Chiefs of Police” developed “Uniform Crime Reporting” (UCR) to improve international comparisons. There’s a lot of info on the Internet. You could start here: http://www.nationalatlas.gov/articles/people/a_crimereport.html

Note the definitions used (there are more extensive lists on other sites).
