Oregon man accused of threatening to blow up sign because of spelling error

An Oregon man is accused of claiming he tried to blow up a sign with a pressure cooker Wednesday morning because it had a spelling mistake.

The man allegedly plunked a pressure cooker on the counter of the Oregon Teachers Standards and Practices Commission office in Salem and told the receptionist he tried to blow up the sign outside.

"He walked quite confidently into our office as though he had a mission, and I think that was what alarmed me right off the bat," Vickie Chamberlain, the commission's executive director, told the Statesman Journal.

The suspect allegedly claimed the bomb failed to detonate because the instructions he downloaded to make the device were misspelled.

The sign in front of the office is missing a 'd' so it reads: "Teacher Standards an Practices Commission."

Chamberlain said she was unsure what happened to the sign, but guessed that the letter may have wore off over time.

Staff called police and the man was arrested nearby. The device wasn't a bomb.

Leonard Burdek, 50, is charged with disorderly conduct, police said.

I used to teach ESL at a college. I was teaching the months of the year, and it dawned on me that I never could spell February. I thought, oh well, none of these people will know the difference. Just my luck it WAS February and someone did notice on the calendar. So I said, “good for you, I wanted to see if anyone would look at the calendar and notice!”

I had to.

Every so often, for a special event, usually on a Friday night, my younger daughter will bring me a bottle of Jack. That will be the night I make a mistake.

I wrote tech manuals and edited them for a living for a while. I have the AP style guide (the old one) and Strunk and White. I don't screw up often.

But when I do, they are down like hawks out of a blinding sun.

I cannot sympathize with this guy over that grammatical error.

But I do have a pet peeve against those who mix up your/you’re, their/there, accept/except, and a few others.

I’m a Capitalization Nazi

Not much of a capitalization Nazi if you ax me. Didn't even capitalize your own name, pax_et_bonum.

Unfortunately the police department number was misspelled and they called 8-1-1.

Oh, yeah. That one too. Plus its/it’s..... but don’t get me started.

This guy was way too extreme. But I can see that some of these other erros are almost pressure cooker worthy.
