Jean Stapleton, an actress whose portrayal of a slow-witted, big-hearted and submissive up to a point housewife on the groundbreaking series All in the Family made her, along with Mary Tyler Moore and Bea Arthur, one of the foremost women in television comedy in the 1970s, died Friday at her home in New York City. She was 90.

Remember ‘That Girl’? Sitcom with Marlo Thomas? Started in 1966 and was seen by many as feminist propaganda. Marlo Thomas later admitted that she was inspired by Betty Friedan’s writing to do the show.

“Marlo Thomas”
I hear she’s a real shrew. Almost makes me feel sorry for Phil Donahue. Almost.
Funniest "stifle" bit from All in the Family: Edith is on the phone saying nothing for several long moments. Gloria asks what's up. The Meathead replies, "I think Archie put her on stifle."
(p.s. For my money, Archie and the Meathead looked ridiculous, which I always thought was probably the real underlying point. Archie was barely literate and the Meathead was living, breathing example of education turning the brains into tapioca pudding. Or: Archie was an illiterate bigot, but the Meathead---if you also accept bigotry as meaning that you can't bear any view other than your own---was a literate bigot.)
Funniest line Jean Stapleton ever uttered: "I tried to have phone sex once but all I got was a busy signal." (In You've Got Mail.)
RIP, Jean Stapleton. And now that Archie and Edith are together again, maybe she'll put him on stifle for a short spell first!
I only watched “Maude” for two reasons, and they were both Adreinne Barbeau...
So memorable in You’ve Got Mail.
Lol. I just clicked on Barbeau’s images, I saw exactly what you meant.
Meathead always got the worst of the argument.
To me MH was hard to like. I was in my early teens theb.
I always figured Norman Lear intended for Archie to be a dumb bigot, but to his surprise, America ended up liking Archie. IIRC, Archie never cheated on Edith, and he worked, supporting his wife, his daughter, AND his idiot son-in-law.
“To me MH was hard to like.”
Agreed. I found him insufferable. A self-righteous know-it-all...living on Archie’s dime. Not a winsome combo.
Good summation. For all his attitudes, Archie came across as eminently likeable.
My father lived with his in-laws for 6 months. He told me he never opened their refrigerator.
Your father sounds like a man of character. They don’t make many like that any more.
Aww gee Edith
I miss the man. 8 years now.
“If you can fid it, theres a nice clip of when Archie baptizes is grandson, Joey.”

I figure Mr. and Mrs. Phil Donahue deserve each other.
