Police in the Turkish city of Istanbul have pulled out of Taksim square, where the largest anti-government protests in years are taking place.
Thousands of people are gathered in the square after days of violence sparked by plans to redevelop a nearby park. Police have fired tear gas and water cannon several times to break up the riots, and rioters have thrown rocks at police.
Turkey's President Abdullah Gul has called for common sense to prevail, admitting that the Taksim square protests had reached a worrisome level. He called on all sides to be "mature", urging police to "act in proportion.
The clashes subsided Saturday afternoon, according to CNN, but protests spread to several other cities, including the capital Ankara and the port city of Izmir.

The protesters say the park is one of the few green spaces left in Istanbul, and that the government is ignoring their appeals for it be saved. The protest began as a sit-in in the park, but turned violent Friday as police fired tear gas .
The BBC quotes correspondents who say that what was initially a local issue has spiraled into widespread anti-government unrest and anger over the perceived 'Islamization' of Turkey.
One woman told Agence France-Presse: "They want to turn this country into an Islamist state, they want to impose their vision all the while pretending to respect democracy."

Tough call but I can’t think of any recent society that is worse than islam. Bass ackwards to the hilt, barbaric, pedophiles, women abuse and worshiping a satanic figure is hard to beat.
Turkey was previously Christian. They should go back to True Faith
People of the religion of peace seems to be a bit upset at their dear leaders.
Those red flags are the Turkish flag representing the anti-theocratic secularist Turkish state, who are battling forces hell bent on making Turkey a new Afghanistan or Iran. In this battle, it is a complete and total no brainer who to root for.
Wow, the women protesting don;t look like they are dressed up in hefty bags....
even communism?
Better Red
Than Mo’ham’ed...
At least commies don’t mutilate their girls with razors when they are little.....
"....no, you can't go back to Constantinople..."
Those are Turkish flags: they happen to be red. I was in Taksim Square on Saturday: this is quite the opposite of Syria, Egypt or Libya. The people out protesting here are absolutely NOT Islamists (and certainly not communists: there are a very small minority of these here, but probably less proportionally than there are in the US), or indeed particularly religious at all. It’s Erdogan’s government which is trying to impose religious law here (banning alcohol sales last week - a deeply unpopular move in Istanbul, as well as trying to alter the constitution to allow himself to remain in office) and the people who are trying to fight back.
In short, this is the opposite of Syria, Egypt or Libya: an Islamist government attempting to impose religious law on a secular population who don’t want it and aren’t interested in it.
If he does not look out he nay be in for a "Ceaucescu"
“In a battle between Islamists and Communists, theres nobody to root for.”

The main difference between the two is that the first one is much like the other and the other is much like the first one.
She has lots of information and links I am sure.
A fair question. Likewise, some forum members post stories always on one topic. One freeper got unfair criticism for always posting stories about Pit Bull attacks ... the Dogs of Peace, they nearly killed someone in Sydney just this week.
I think it is good that some people favor one source, or one topic. If one wants a digest of that news, one can just check their posts. And if one doesn't like it, one can give it the go by.
Don't you have anything better to do than harass half the people who post here ? Just how much is the other side paying you to cause trouble here and trying to chase other people away ? What the hell is wrong with you BOY ?
Who’s the communists? Most of the people demonstrating are adherants of Mustafa Kemal Attuturk and are secular or non-Islamist. Basically, city dwellers that want to live the Western lifestyle and not be told what color lipstick they can wear, that they can’t kiss in public, or can have a drink with their friends and not be called alcoholics. Where are you getting the communist part from? Curious....
You are sooooo right. Must be a sign of the times, there’s a lot of snapping going on. At least that’s all I hope it is. I’m not jewish, but I do read Arutz Sheva from time to time, it’s Israeli National News:

Interestingly Ataturk was a descendant of Shabbatai Zevi as was Jacob Frank (both Turks), the ideological progenitor of what became the Bund der Gerechten, the force behind Marx himself. That legacy remains active in Turkey today.
However, the average Turk isn’t a Marxist, and Marxists or Communists are held in low regard...they’re Nationalist’s with a respect for Atuturk and just want the damn government out of their lives and dictating how they should live their life...sound familiar to our situation? And yes, the rural population are pro-AKP, because they’ve been given handouts, which is also familiar to our situation...How are you tying Ataturk to Communism? Again, the article you show in the previous post specifies that he curtailed/restricted/banned their activities and the left-wing Communists are very few in number there...as has been my experience.
