Train derails in Maryland, explosion reported

WHITE MARSH, Md. (AP) -- A cargo train derailed Tuesday in a Baltimore suburb and an explosion could be heard for miles, collapsing nearby buildings and setting them on fire, officials and witnesses said.

John Kane, treasurer of Atlantic Tire on nearby Pulaski Highway, said the explosion blew out two large showcase windows and light fixtures in his shop.

He also said police had apparently stopped traffic on nearby Pulaski Highway not far from the tracks and he no longer had any customers at his donut shop.

God forgive me for thinking what I thought when I read that line.

This sort of thing has been happening far too frequently lately. First there was that massive explosion at the fertilizer plant in Texas, which investigators have yet to explain. Then there was the collapse of the Interstate Five bridge in North Washington last week. And now this huge train derailment. Call me paranoid if you want, but I am wondering if these are terrorist attacks that the media and the Obama Administration are hiding from us to protect themselves.

I live in WA state, and the bridge collapse was caused by a truck with a tall load that clipped the top of the bridge. This caused the end section of the bridge to collapse.

The driver is a 20 year veteran with an impeccable safety record. He has been driving specialty loads for 10 years. His route was registered and certified before he left.

DOT knew and approved the route he was taking before he took it. Bridge clearance was listed at 17 feet, and his load was measured at 15’9” before he took the route. He should have been fine. Driver was tested for alcohol and was not charged at the scene with any crime.

Only the stupid truck driver who ran the train barrier thinking he could “beat the train”. He is in critical condition after the engine plowed into his garbage truck causing the derailment. The explosion and shock wave was felt 20 miles away. Fifteen cars derailed and four are/were filled with explosive chemicals. I live 20 miles away and felt and heard the explosion.

We used to liveaboard out in the San Juans (Deer Harbor)from ‘81 to ‘85...then a stint in Lynnwood followed by a settlement in Arlington via Marysville until ‘91. We loved Western Washington...Leavenworth, Winthrop and Western Oregon as well (Enterprise, Joseph). Long ago a cabin at altitude in Idaho from ‘72 to ‘76.
