Byron York: Immigration could spoil Marco Rubio's presidential chances
Washington Examiner ^ | May 27, 2013 | Byron York

In November 2007 I traveled around western Iowa with Sen. John McCain as he tried to claw his way back into the 2008 Republican presidential primary race. McCain's campaign had famously melted down a few months earlier, sending him plunging in the polls. Things didn't look good.

As we rode in a battered minivan, I asked McCain about his troubles, mainly campaign money problems and then the fallout from his stand in favor of immigration reform. Which was worse? I asked. McCain answered quickly: Immigration.

"I can show you polling numbers that it really didn't have anything to do with the financial situation," McCain told me. "As the immigration issue became hotter and hotter among Republicans, I started down."

To recover, McCain talked tough on immigration. His mantra became "secure the border first." It was enough for him to get back on his feet and eventually win the GOP nomination, despite a fourth-place showing in Iowa.

All McCain. All the time. Sorry about that, but Byron York is pretty good.

Rubio is not eligible to be president. He is not a natural born citizen. Neither is Obama.

The Constitution just continues to get crapped on.

I think it already has. The GOP-e needs somebody to get the nomination because they are DEATHLY afraid of Ted Cruz as much as they were of Sarah Palin and so they will prop up Rubio and take shots at Cruz.

In '07, I asked McCain what was the most fundamental problem with his reform proposal. "What I underestimated was the lack of trust and confidence in government," he told me. "I mean, I said time after time, 'We'll enforce the borders. We'll enforce the borders. Here's X billion dollars to do it. We'll enforce the borders.' They just didn't believe us."

Can either Senator McCain or Senator Rubio give us one single reason to believe the government will enforce the borders.

No, they cannot. They have not enforced the border. And they won't enforce the border. They know that. We know that.

So, why are they astounded at our distrust?

Depends on how you define natural born citizen.

TED CRUZ (and plenty of others) define it as being a citizen the day you were born...”from birth” on, you are a citizen. They say the other kind of citizen is one who is not a citizen from the day of birth, but instead becomes naturalized through the naturalization process.

Shocker, I know, to you, but Ted Cruz claims citizenship at birth from being born to an American citizen mother of legal age (18). That his mother was working in Canada the day of his birth has nothing to do with anything. He is not a Canadian citizen. He is not a man without a country. He never had to become naturalized in order to be a citizen. He was one from birth onward. According to that definition of natural born citizen, he is.

I don’t know Rubio’s exact history and am not interested in it. I am afraid that Rubio has chosen most unwisely in this immigration bill cause. I have concluded that Rubio isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer. I’m still trying to decide what Rand Paul’s excuse is...

I’m well aware that the United States recognizes “anchor babies”...an illegal alien crosses the border into America and has a baby and that supposedly makes baby a citizen. This is a stupid choice that this country’s rulers have made. It should not be allowed, and it causes great confusion in peoples’ minds because they think everyone everywhere is automatically not a U.S. citizen if not born on American soil. Not true, but the allowance of anchor baby citizens here makes many believe that.

Rubio can go away, for all I care. He’s an inspirational speaker and that’s about it.

Disagree. Byron is a mega creep. Much in the Tucker Carlson mold, but a bigger jerk. I have met them both several times.

Rubino is dead politically. Anyone that supports the massive growth of the Democrat voting base is an enemy of freedom.

Secure the border and deport all the illegals. They can assemble at the back of the legal immigration queue. The sooner they leave, the sooner they get in line. This is not hard.

That Ted Cruz is a citizen because of his mother’s citizenship, I do not doubt. It is called, derivative citizenship, or jus sanguinis. One must be a citizen to be either a Representative in the House OR a Senator, which is Ted Cruz’s office.

The eligibility clause in the U.S.Constitution states that one must be a Natural born Citizen, which requires meeting a higher non-statutory class than just ‘citizen’. It means that one has been born in the U.S.A. of two citizen parents, and no stinking legal statute is required to assert one’s citizenship.

Don’t like that Constitutional clause? Get Congress to change it. They will not do so because they know the majority of Americans don’t want to change it.
