So many memories for me of the 500. My parents took us there most years between 1958 & 1968. We were right at the place where Eddie Sachs had his fatal crash, and I remember my mother grabbing me and hauling me down under the seats as the fireball came our way.
Back in the 'old days' people would set up scaffolding on the back stretch, and party hearty with their birds eye view. Unfortunately, people got killed when their scaffolding collapsed.
I last attended the race in 1974, but I have been to a couple of time trial weekends since then , and twice I took my family there for a visit, and we rode around the track in the tourist buses.
My family knows I am glued to the TV set during the 500 ... don't bother to call.

Friend ‘s dad was in VIP. We couldn’t get in. We were still in high school. Our band played the opening ceremony twice. Marched the track twice after doing the parade the day before. Such a thrill for young people. It’s hard to live in the state without having some connection or special memories of the race!

I think the fuel consumption issue was due to the pressure ratio they restricted them to.

YUP!
Wasn’t aware that they still hang chalk boards over the pit wall. I thought that had stopped years ago.

Same thing- reduces the pressure ratio over which the turbine operates and decreases efficiency.

Looks like two engine manufacturers rule the roost, Honda and Shiver-lay.
The Honda (HI13RT) is a DOHC four valve turbocharged 2.2L V6, rev-limited at 12,000RPM, dry sumped. Six-speed sequential-shift transaxle.
