In an era when men weren’t afraid to be moved to tears by music, this sentimental tune could reduce a grizzled old NCO in seconds. Stephen Foster wrote this heartbreaker, and Thomas Hampson sings it with sweet passion.

”Gentle Annie”

It’s fascinating how many songs of the South have that Scots-Irish sound. They were born fighting.

”Rose of Alabamy”

Stephen Foster gave a dying slave human dimensions, and this sentimental favorite, here performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale, was beautiful enough to appeal to both sides.

”Old Black Joe”

This is a Northern song about a call for volunteers to fight the Southern foe.

”We are Coming, Father Abraham”

This is as close as the Confederacy got to having an actual national anthem.

”God Save the South”

OMG. YouTube requires a login to play the Bonnie Blue Flag video because it has been flagged as inappropriate. To hell with YouTube!

Stephen Foster wrote this early in his career, and it has stood the test of time, even though the lyrics are politically incorrect today. Both armies loved this tune.

”Ring, Ring the Banjo”

This is one of the best known campfire songs of the Union Army, and this is a fine version.

”Tenting on the Old Campground”

A Southern song about peanuts sung by Burl Ives and Johnny Cash.

”Goober Peas”

Horse soldiering is a lot more fun than the infantry, especially when Nathan Bedford Forrest is leading you.

”Jine the Cavalry”

When I access that number, it asks me if I really want to see it. I click the blue button, and I get in.

BTW, I like the Herman Melville FReeper name.

I use the name on other forums. I was once asked if he was a baseball player from the Dominican Republic. :)

This originally came from the South, but great tunes can cross even battle lines, and Northerners sang this with relish.

”Wait for the Wagon”

This is Richie Havens singing the anthem of black troops wanting to fight for the Union.

”Give Us a Flag”

You can hear the Scots-Irish lilt in this song from the South.

”Mister, Here’s Your Mule”

And so we wrap up our Memorial Day retrospective of the songs of the Civil War. See you next weekend with more Rockumentary.

Just a drive by to say Hello,
and to thank you for all your hard work on the music thread.
Prof, you have done an OUTSTANDING job this weekend!

Drumbo, thanks for the tribute to Ray Manzarek!

I am “feeling puny” as Luvvy would say.
Had to adjust my meds as the RSD pain has escalated so much
these past two weeks.

Tonight, even my hands hurt.
Please don’t give up on me!
Love to all..
Ms B.

Hello Kathy...

Just dropping by to Honor our Great Military....none like them in the entire world! I am so grateful for those I have known , those I know today and those yet coming for all the tomorrows!

Lord God,

May your good hand be with those in the battlefield this week-end...protecting,.. guiding... and lifting hearts that need.

May you bless those who have served our country so admirably in the past...and may those who are with you now know we will never forget their sacrifice... nor that of their families... for the freedoms we continue to enjoy in this great nation.

And Lord,... forget not this nation that once gladly gave you the Glory for how far we had come....and forgive us for what it is becoming... until we have rightly placed you at the helm once again. Give us all strength to endure until that time... as we wait in ..and trust... in you.

In Christ's name..and for His Glory,

Amen
