Sears Holdings Corp. reported a steeper-than-expected loss for its first quarter with the beleaguered retailer, blaming a cooler spring for falling sales.
The operator of Sears and Kmart stores also said its considering strategic options for its service-agreement business, such as selling it off, to raise cash. Service agreements are when customers pay an extra fee when buying an appliance and the company agrees to fix or replace it if it breaks within a certain time.
The steep loss drove Sears shares down more than 11 percent in after-hours trading.

Been wondering as in my travels about the area there are two Sears stores I pass often, one in the Arlington District of Riverside, and the other in Moreno Valley. Both have empty parking lots whenever I pass by usually midday. Causes one to wonder when seeing empty parking lot time after time one passes by.
for a second I thought that said IQ loss
“blaming a cooler spring for falling sales.”
Yeah, that’s it.
Of course..couldn’t have anything to do with the fact their service sucks.
“...blaming a cooler spring for falling sales.”

Has nothing to do with the fact that Sears’ merchandise has turned into cr*p.
Yep, that ol’ economy sure is making a comeback.
Might be that also.
Ron White must have settled....
forty years ago Sears was a destination store. Now it is a desperation store, one of my last choices when searching for something.
My thoughts exactly. I remember being a young tike cruising through a local, small Sears store in our suburban NJ community and my Dad saying that Sears had good stuff. Those days are way long past.
Sears tools used to be the epitome of quality, and they backed them.
They’re nothing more than cheap plastic crap now.
JC Penney can kiss my royal a$$ but I *am* saddened by what’s happening to Sears.I remember as a kid that *everyone* wanted the 800 page Sears catalog. It’s been such a central part of this country for so many decades.
There is a large Sears store in my area, and I’ve been expecting its demise for years. Huge parking lots with maybe a dozen cars.
We have an amazing Sears in Little Rock. It is massive in scale, unfortunately, it is but a mere shadow of its former self.
We have a K-mart “zombie store” in our town.
You walk in there and it looks like a store but no people inside.
I have no idea how they even pay the utilities and taxes.
That’s what I see too, and I think those might be employee cars.
We have the same situation at our closest K-Mart in Bozeman. It’s completely empty...while the Wal Mart across the street is usually packed. Like you wrote - i have no idea how they stay in business.
They even had half of the lights turned off, and it wasn't closing time. It was the middle of the day.
Ha....I know what you mean. The Big K-Mart/Sears store or whatever it’s called keeps most of the lights off & has buckes around the store to catch the leaking water when it rains. Sears was once an outstanding store, but you have to go back to the 70s at least when they were last on top of their game.
