Obama to Restart Transfers From Guantanamo By JULIAN E. BARNES, EVAN PEREZ and ADAM ENTOUS

WASHINGTON—The Obama administration is set to restart transfers of detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, U.S. officials said, kick-starting a long-stalled drive to close the prison.

In a speech Thursday, President Barack Obama will reassert his case that closing Guantanamo is crucial to U.S. counterterrorism goals. While he isn't planning to detail in the speech how to speed up transfers from the prison, officials said the president in coming weeks plans to lift the administration's prohibition on sending detainees to Yemen.

The president in the speech also is set to lay down the broader outlines of his administration's approach to efforts to fight al Qaeda and its affiliates, including through the use of unmanned aircraft strikes.

Ahead of the president's speech, the administration told Congress in a letter Wednesday that four Americans have been killed in drone strikes, the first official acknowledgment of the deaths by the government. Attorney General Eric Holder wrote that only Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical Muslim cleric, was specifically targeted. Mr. Awlaki was killed in a drone strike in September 2011.

He’s probably going to try and make productive citizens out of them... perhaps they’ll get jobs at the IRS.

... closing Guantanamo is crucial to U.S. counterterrorism goals

Guantanamo is more respected by Muslim radicals than gay marriage.

I love the Rubio commercial touting the proposed immigration bill.

He says that ‘undocumenteds’ will undergo background checks and pay a fine.

Huh? These people are here because they broke the laws of this country to begin with. So all of a sudden, they are all gonna start obeying any new laws that your gang of eight might get passed?

Pay a fine? Marco really does not know his target audience, does he...

...”the president .... to lift the prohibition on sending detainees to Yemen.”

...”the president .... is to set efforts to fight al Qaeda and its affiliates.”

Ugh? What an ‘insane’ contradiction!!!

This is not really a diversion, but rather, doing something that will go under the radar in the midst of these other scandals.

Dubya should have cut loose with military tribunals on these guys, with executions where appropriate. Housing these scum long term at Gitmo so they can wait around be released by a fool like Obama was always a losing proposition.

I think you’re right. I hear them mumbling. Of all the things they should be mumbling about . . . but no, he said he’d close Guantanamo.

And why to Yemen? The worst of the worst. The terrorists there will break them out of prison.

Two birds with one stoned . . . er, stone.

Plus there has been so much bleeding-heart nonsense SOMEWHERE in the leftist press about the hunger strikes. Probably Russian TV or the BBC. I hear it daily. How terrible force-feeding is weep weep.

The guy who started this hunger strike business is, I seem to recall, the worst of the worst of the prisoners.

The prisoners will be released and get another chance at violence against the US. They need trials before a military commission, not transfers to the civil courts.

This is not really a diversion, but rather, doing something that will go under the radar in the midst of these other scandals.

There are some who believe that the Benghazi 'protest' was engineered to take Amb. Stevens and staff hostage in order to trade them for terrorists in Guantanamo.

It appears the goal has been achieved (releasing/trading terrorists) anyway. Under the radar, so to speak.

Obama will give a speech today on Gitmo and the use of drones. He needs to change the subject of the scandals and go on the offensive as our CIC protecting the American public and our justice system.

Of course he will justify why it was necessary to kill American citizens to protect us from terrorism and why it is necessary to close Gitmo so it is no longer an issue that attracts more people to become terrorists and attack us.

Congress will be off next week so you can expect lots of Obama all day, all of the time. On Sunday he heads to Oklahoma to act as our national healer. Obama will be in campaign mode for the rest of his Presidency and thereafter. He will be a divisive and powerful political figure for decades.

Will he mention that the DRONE that was flying over Benghazi during the 'protests' and 'consulate attack' was ARMED ?

I agree. I’m not sure what got some of these guys to Gitmo in the first place. I’d have to think those just caught by association are long gone by now. The ones there should be fairly hard core. When warranted I certainly back execution. Where not, they’re exactly where they belong.
