NO LINK ON THEIR WEBSITE YET,
Not exactly. Here in Dallas, the bedrock can be 30 feet down. Texas soil is notorious for expanding and contracting. As the saying goes, it’s not will you have foundation damage, but how much? Imagine what that does to a basement or cellar.
Comments like yours on a thread like this are in horrible taste. You are blaming parents of children who died.
Hundreds, if not thousands of homes were destroyed. They don't have basements in that part of the country. I'll just leave it at that...
God bless his loved ones and friends left behind and all the grieving families left in Oklahoma. I have no right to dedicate Zach's touching song to the innocents lost today. But I feel a big hole. If only they had a little bit more time with each other.
The lyrics to 'Clouds' :
Well I fell down, down, downInto this dark and lonely hole
There was no one there to care about me anymore
And I needed a way to climb and grab a hold of the edge
You were sitting there holding a rope.
And we'll go up, up, up
But I'll fly a little higher
We'll go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer
Up here my dear
It won't be long now, it won't be long now.
When I get back on land
Well I'll never get my chance
Be ready to live and it'll be ripped right out of my hands
Maybe someday we'll take a little ride
We'll go up, up, up and everything will be just fine.
And we'll go up, up, up
But I'll fly a little higher
We'll go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer
Up here my dear.
It won't be long now, it won't be long now
If only I had a little bit more time
If only I had a little bit more time with you.
We could go up, up, up
And take that little ride
And sit there holding hands
And everything would be just right
And maybe someday I'll see you again
We'll float up in the clouds and we'll never see the end.
And we'll go up, up, up
But I'll fly a little higher
We'll go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer
Up here my dear
It won't be long now, it won't be long now.

Tornadoes travel at about 30 mph. Some travel twice that speed. I have observed this with my own two eyes a couple of times in Texas. But cars travel at high speeds and when you drive at a right angle to the tornado track at 60 mph it takes you exactly 2 minutes to exit a two mile wide tornado track if traffic allows. Life is about choices. I would choose to exit the track given any kind of warning if I was in the track without good cover. I think this is logical and really don’t see what the argument is about to tell you the truth.
Channel 9 just said that there was 40-50 people still trapped beneath the rubble of the school.
I just saw that Zach died today. More tears on top of this horrible tragedy. Will be saying a lot of prayers tonight for those suffering and lost. So much sadness tonight, it’s palpable.
**We’ll float up in the clouds and we’ll never see the end.**
If you are a believer, death can be beautiful. Thank you Zach.
**And everything would be just right
And maybe someday I’ll see you again**
Sorry, but I worked in the OKC area as a hydrogeologist for over 10 years (and a bit as a petroleum geologist in the western portion of the state). I know the area. The limestone that you reference is at or near the surface in the NE portion of the state (where I now live), and exposed in the mountains in the SE (Ouachitas) and S (Arbuckles and Wichitas).
Look up the Anadarko Basin. OKC is on the eastern perimeter of this basin, with Permian shales and sandstone exposed at the surface, and at depth. The limestone that you referenced are more than 25,000 feet deep in the deeper portions of the basin. Above is shale, sandstone and some thin, discontinuous limestone, mostly shale.
Underneath the OKC area are the Garber and Wellington Formations, mostly sandstone and interbedded shale, up to a depth of several thousand feet. This is the main aquifer of the area.
Try this link for the state geologic map: http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/ofr-03-247/OK_map.pdf.
Many schools are tornado shelters. A brick building is considered more likely to survive a tornado or disaster than trailers, tin buildings, or modern cheaply made apartments and houses. Wasn’t enough in this case.
Sounds like you are assuming that the roads will be clear of all traffic, emergency vehicles, etc. Not a good assumption... What if 1,000 others think like you do and all hit the road at the same time?
He was a beautiful young guy with a gift for words and music. Hope he’s resting in the arms of the Lord right now and the victims of this terrible tornado. My heart just breaks for the parents of the young ones and the children of the older ones and everyone in between. *blurry screen*
Just how fast do you think a tornado travels?
They are saying it was an F5 tornado
Me too. Do have any spare kleenex?
I just got through blowing my nose and wiping my eyes as I read your reply. (Passes the box) Just gave my son (16) a huge hug as he goes to bed. He hates to see me cry. Can’t help it tonight. Many, many prayers going up tonight!
Actually I mentioned traffic. You must have missed that. Look I’ve had this same argument with different folks about different things. I teach my children and grandchildren to act based on their knowledge of the situation and their abilities to either move or take cover. Huddling in a classroom with a nut armed to the teeth and intent on murdering innocents is not a good strategy. Neither is sitting in the easy chair in your trailer while a monster tornado tracks down on you when the pickup can still do 50. Like I said life is about choices and sometimes we make the wrong ones. I know I have. At any rate my prayers are with these good folks and my money will be as well when they establish a fund. Adios.
Survival is obviously a numbers game, but with this much warning couldn’t they have tried to go West like last night when the risk would have been lower, or at least further into the center of the city ?
The average tornado has forward speed of 30mph. Some reach speeds of 70 mph but not very many do that. How long does it take you to drive perpendicular to a tornado 2 miles wide at 60mph when you are driving at approximately right angles to the tornado?
And BTW I have seen what happens to a trailer park in the track of an average tornado up close and personal about 35 years ago. Not a chance in hell I would stay in a trailer with a tornado tracking my way when the truck is in the driveway.
Holding our loved ones close tonight.
Bless you and your family.
