HHS:'Telework' Gives Gov't Employees More Time for 'Planning and Preparing Healthy Meals' May 17, 2013 By Terence P. Jeffrey
(CNSNews.com) - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says it wants as many as 20 percent of its workers to "telework," use an "alternative work schedule," or do both, in order to "reduce green house gas emissions," decrease "employee stress," and give these government workers more time for "planning and preparing healthy meals."
So says one of the HHS "performance measures" detailed in an appendix to the department's latest strategic plan.
HHS's performance measure "4.D.05" says: "Increase the percent employees on telework or on Alternative Work Schedule."
Telework means working from home via phone and computer. An "alternative work schedule," according to the federal Office of Personnel Management means having "flexible work schedules and compressed work schedules." A compressed work schedule means putting the 80 hours of work required in a two-week government pay period into less than 10 work days.
Theoretically, under the HHS strategic goal, an HHS employee could telework from home 80 hours one week and then not work at all the next week--and dedicate copious time to "planning and preparing healthy meals" and other behaviors HHS wants to increase among government employees.
"This goal is in concert with implementation of the HHS Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan (SSPP) prepared under Executive Order (EO) 13514, which requires HHS to reduce green house gas (GHG) emissions by technological, programmatic and behavioral changes," says the HHS strategic plan.
The plan includes a chart that indicates that this year (fiscal 2013) a little more than 15 percent of HHS employees are "teleworking" or working a "compressed work schedule." The government agency wants that to increase to 20 percent by fiscal 2015, which starts in October 2014.

We're so lucky to have the government as our nanny........
so lets see...salaried employees who’s income and pensions are virtually guaranteed with work from home?? that sounds both efficient and productivity will likey be off the charts!! /sarc
Some people can be trusted to work at home, but for others its just internet surfing time without the danger of being caught. Perhaps they will surf the social sites to find lists of names of pesky conservatives. I’ll bet their supervisors would find that productive.
There are very few government employees I would trust and those sitting behind computers are the least trustworthy in my book. Did this comment get me on an audit list?
These people are idiots...
Did these folks never hear of grabbing a salad.
Well, since it is the government, I’m sure they will find a way to see just what their workers will now be eating.
But in general, do you think anyone will change their eating habits just because they have ‘extra’ time??
If it were up to me a whole lot of government employees would get all the time they need for whatever they want to do.
After a hard day of harassing conservatives, an SS officer needs a health and hearty meal.
You are so right. I work for the G. and this is actually a complex question.
1. Few people (ESPECIALLY gov. filth) can be trusted to telework.
2. I CAN be trusted. I don’t like work hanging over my head, and when I telework, that FOUR AND A HALF HOURS EACH DAY that I am not commuting to work. Instead I get a LOT done, by using some of that 4.5 hours to catch up and even get ahead.
3. And I’m not even being facetious here... It might be a BAD thing that I get more done. My job, like 99% of all G. jobs, wastes money and contributes to the death of the country. Wouldn’t it be better for everybody to pay me to do nothing? That way, only my salay is wasted, as opposed to the salary, plus the damage I do the country by working.
It’d be safer for America if we paid them not to work.
Could this have nothing to do with eating habits..just a ruse..and everything to do with having no witnesses to the tasks performed while on the computer? Tin foil hat squarely on head.
Yep! I managed 5 people, 4 of whom I could trust and one who played Internet casino games right outside my office. Had to get rid him.
As for the commute, that is so true and it even goes further when you can trust someone. I would work from home too, usually rising between 4-5 AM and not stopping until 6 PM with about 20 minutes off for lunch. My commute wasn’t as long as yours but as soon as I could brew my coffee and roll my cigarette, I was ready for work.
HHS Nanny State PING!
It did now.
Just kidding. :-)

Wouldn’t unemployment allow someone to plan even better meals?
Why not just switch to a private-sector job when the economy recovers?
Oh, wait. That’s not gonna happen. Never mind . . .
The way to handle remote employees is good ol' fashioned "management by objective".
Thanks for the ping!
I work mostly from home for a Fortune 500 company. The workload is so crazy that most days, I’m lucky to even get a bathroom break, much less prepare a meal. Now, we do prepare salads ahead of time, and I have to gobble those down while in meetings. I have a lot of frozen Amy’s... (organic, non-GMO frozen lunches). The days I go into the office, I bring veggies, fruit... granola bars...
I guess if I had a worthless British goobt job that didn’t require me to produce anything, I could spend the time cooking...
