The House Ways and Means Committee holds the first Congressional hearing on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) subjecting applicants for tax-exempt status to higher levels of scrutiny based on political leanings.
Witnesses include Acting IRS Commissioner Steve Miller who resigned on Wednesday and the Treasury Departments Inspector General Russell George for Tax Administration.
Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) said the IRS' targeting of "American taxpayers based on politics is both astounding and appalling." He stated that the Committee will "get to the bottom of this practice and ensure it never takes place again.
In announcing the hearing, Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) said that it is "essential that there be a thorough and bipartisan investigation and effective remedial action.
Since June 2011, the Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating whether the Internal Revenue Service discriminated against taxpayers based on political opinions.
Miller is an arrogant bastard. Somebody needs to take him down.
Rangel should be behind bars.
I’ve been audited:
They did not like it when I said “I don’t know”.
They did not like it when I said “I’m not sure”.
They did not like it when I said “I don’t recall”.
They did not like it when I said “I’ll get back to you”.
They did not like it when I said “I don’t know what data that was”.
They did not like it when I said “I was not aware of that”.
They did not like it when I said “I don’t have that data at hand”.
Oh, the IRS points out that they can put you in jail. That’s something they don’t forget.
Steve Miller is a jerk. He is the perfect example of the mentality of the IRS. They are pompous, arrogant, self-centered and none of them think they work for the taxpayer. They think they are our masters. Steve Miller oozes this attitude.
Note that the way they are setup they basically “inspect” or “investigate” themselves.
As far as was someone appointed by Bush or by whoever who cares? It does not matter. The IRS is a relic of the past. A bunch of paper pushers that are not needed in the information age. It needs to be abolished and another system put in to place that takes money in based on money spent. A system where no personal information is collected by the federal government.
FYI, after the audit I owed ZERO.
Started under Bush.....are these the same aholes who demanded this not turn into a partisan attack.
Rangel: Outraged. Bush. Bush. Outrage. Outrage. Outrage. Drink, drink, drink, drink, etc.
Yep, this is irony at its best...
Lists and scanning code don’t just create themselves.
Why is Rangel still on this committee? The whole thing reeks. Nothing will come of these hearings and they will come out of it with a pass to continue to abuse power. NJ has primariers in June. Straight Tea Party votes for me.
Miller’s determined to go out in a blaze of glory! Obama will pat him on the back for a job well done.
Nothing he says should be believed...he simply has nothing to loose.
The libs are really pushing the Bush issue, and Rangel even being on this panel makes the libs look even worse.
Politicians create these massive agencies, give them huge amounts of money, power and manpower and then act shocked when citizens get abused.
How many times, for example, has BATFE been investigated for abuses? What ever comes of it? That agency is still around and has more money and power than ever before.
I’m skeptical anything will come of this IRS “investigation” other than a bunch of blowhard politicans bloviating about how they will make sure and fix things this time so abuses never happen again. Sure. Right.
Now Rangel is blaming Citizens United case, the third talking point.
I'm sure he'll get his taxpayer funded bonus on the way out.
Miller should lose his pension.
No. Everyone is posting well, so far as I can tell and imo. If something I posted came off bady, it was not intentional
Miller should lose his freedom.
You know the GOP doesn’t actually want to get to the facts and truth.
That would mean these scandals would be resolved before election time.
Instead of resolving these scandals and sending lawbreakers to jail, the GOP
wants to do what what they always do... use it as a campaign issue so they
can gain power and spend like drunken sailors too.
Right...and making the earlier point that Miller is not a political appointee is totally relevant...most govt employees in DC regardless of admin are lib dim, socialists who suck off the govt...
Now the Dems are blaming this on Bush. He appointed Shulman.
Yep. As usual, the Dems are not backing down at all. Fighting for every inch of turf. The Dems have thrown down the gaunlet. Will Boehner & McConnell pick it up?
Would Karl Rove object to targeting Tea Party? Bush appointee helps how?
